This Fish Hatchery Technician role at Sol Duc Hatchery plays a key part in supporting salmonid conservation by assisting with essential hatchery operations during peak workloads.
This dynamic role combines physical work with environmental stewardship, contributing directly to the health of local salmonid populations.
What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Fish Hatchery Technician will,
- Assist with feeding juvenile salmonids.
- Clean ponds, water intakes, tanks, troughs, and egg trays using high-pressure pumps and manual tools.
- Aid in with handling adult salmon for broodstock collection, sorting, spawning, and surplus, as well as data collection, including mark tracking and snout collection.
- Help maintain facility grounds, including mowing, weed eating, trimming trees and bushes, road maintenance, net mending, and cleaning.
- Assist in recording fish collection, egg counts, feed usage, and pond mortalities.
Working Conditions:
Work Setting, including hazards: Will work outside in all weather conditions, approximately 250 days a year. Perform strenuous physical activities including repetitively lifting at least 50lbs of fish feed bags and salt blocks and using a respirator and other personal protective equipment (PPE) while working with various chemicals used at facility. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.
Travel Requirements: None.
Tools and Equipment: Agency vehicles, utility vehicles, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, pond vacuum, pressure washer, tractor, weed eaters, and basic tools and equipment.
Customer Interactions: Will occasionally need to answer questions from the public.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or General Educational Development (GED).
Certifications/Licenses:
Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:
- Basic fish culture techniques, rearing procedures, and identification of adult salmonids.
- Understanding of water dynamics (e.g. flows, patterns, availability, temperature, etc.).
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and ability to calculate quantities/proportions.
- Basic computer skills, including spreadsheet and word processing knowledge.
- Calibration of specialized instruments (e.g. scales, Dissolved Oxygen meters).
- Safe and proper use/maintenance of tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of resources and guides for completing forms/documents accurately.
- Familiarity with applicable agency policies and procedures.
- Adherence to safety regulations.
