The Quail Research Laboratory, a member of the Center for Gamebird Research at Texas A&M University – Commerce, is seeking four motivated undergraduate or graduate students to assist with research on how climate and eco-toxicants impact quail populations. Most Research will occur in the Quail Research Laboratory on campus; however, Quail Research Technicians will have opportunities to participate in field research. 

The successful applicant will conduct research and gain experience in the laboratory and/or field as part of a growing quail research team. Quail Research Technicians will be involved in the scientific process, and learn how to conduct a literature review, assist with writing scientific manuscripts, conduct laboratory and/or field research, operate wildlife research equipment, evaluate data, effectively manage time, and conduct quail population surveys.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with laboratory and field data collection and associated tasks
  • Assist with animal care, feeding, husbandry, and associated cleaning
  • Assist with data collection, processing, and presentation
  • Gain marketable skills by learning to use wildlife research equipment (e.g., ELISA assays, HP liquid chromatography, incubators, trail cameras)
  • Conduct auditory and visual census counts of gamebirds
  • Learn and use proper handling techniques for quail and other wildlife
  • Operate a UTV and field truck

Minimum Requirements

Experience: Enthusiastic about working with quail and conducting quail research, completion of college level courses in wildlife or a related field, and/or demonstrated experience assisting with similar research.

Knowledge/Skills: Strong work ethic, positive attitude, professionalism, punctuality, good organizational and communication skills, computer literacy (e.g., M.S. Word, Excel), and good driving record. Must have the ability to follow experiment and data collection protocols, handle confidential information, and work independently and as part of a diverse team.
