CLINICAL LAB SPECIALIST I

The Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory is a full-service laboratory accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians and member of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN). It provides in-depth laboratory diagnostic support to veterinary practitioners, livestock and poultry industry interests, companion animal interests, wildlife conservationists, scientists utilizing animals in their research throughout the university, state and regulatory officials, and clinicians of the MU Veterinary Health Center. The laboratory handles more than 200,000 specimens a year and serves Missouri’s 114 counties and surrounding states by performing over 170,000 diagnostic tests annually. The VMDL also conducts fundamental and applied research to address animal health and public health issues.
The Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (VMDL) is seeking to hire a Clinical Lab Specialist I.
Representative Duties Include:
- Follow laboratory standard operating procedures ( SOPs) and comply with quality assurance policies.
- Interact with coworkers and clients in a professional manner.
- Responsible for assisting the pathologists and managing avian caseload.
- Assists the pathologists & veterinary students with collecting tissues on necropsies and recording data. Trims avian fixed tissue biopsies and necropsies for slide preparation. This requires knowledge of various organ systems and the ability to identify specific tissues from each organ system.
- Conducts serologic tests, which may include various ELISAs, plate agglutination tests, HI tests, and AGID tests. Performs proficiency tests for NPIP and NAHLN as needed.
- Speaks with avian and poultry clients in person and on the phone to obtain clinical histories and other necessary information.
- Maintains reagents and supplies in adequate quantities to provide for continuous service in the avian laboratory.
- Responsible for cleaning and sanitizing avian necropsy and laboratory areas.
- Maintains records on quality control, chemical inventories, unwanted materials, and biohazardous materials in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Health and Safety office at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
SHIFT
Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; occasionally staying after 5:00 p.m. is required to service client needs. 40 hours per week (FTE 1.0).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree with emphasis in an appropriate area of science, such as animal science, biology, or microbiology.
Experience working in a laboratory setting is necessary.
Relevant experience is preferred. A willingness to learn and adapt to varied daily responsibilities is appreciated.
ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE
Salary Range $21.50 - $26.11 per hour, salary commensurate with education and experience
