Kresge Library's Service Desk is always staffed and is often the first contact that library users have with the library. Student assistants must represent the library in a positive manner. Punctuality, dependability, and an ability to deliver excellent customer service are essential components of this position. Student assistants can expect to answer questions, take phone calls, circulate library materials, monitor the library building, and assist with special projects as needed.
Cover letters are requested. These do not need to be lengthy, but they should talk specifically about why you are interested in working in a library.
Requirements
Willingness and ability to work an established schedule
Accuracy with alpha/numeric sequences
Attention to detail.
Ability to use computers and library automation system.
Ability to work without close supervision.
Dependability.
Keyboarding skills.
Good interpersonal communication skills.
Capable of reading labels for shelving and shelf-reading.
Physical ability to stand, bend and lift books.
Ability to move loaded book carts.
Sufficient English language skills to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and communicate clearly with library users.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1. Assist library patrons at the Service Desk
2. Lend and receive library materials
3. Adhere to library policies and procedures
4. Explain policies and procedures to patrons
5. Answer and transfer incoming calls or take messages
6. Use the library catalog and OU website to help patrons
7. Locate and retrieve items in Reserve, Interlibrary Loan or other special Hold Locations
8. Search for and retrieve items held in the library’s stacks
9. Shelve library material and shelf-read for correctness
10. Shift library materials as directed
11. Direct patrons to other departments/locations on campus
12. Assist in opening and/or closing library as needed
13. Assist in maintaining the appearance of the library
14. Report problems to a supervisor
15. Work weekend and late shifts
16. Be customer oriented, pleasant, courteous and approachable
17. Work well both unsupervised and as part of a team
