Engineering and Science Fellowship

  Engineering and Science Fellowship

About the role

UNandUP LLC is a dynamic, early-stage start-up company working to advance high-risk medical technologies from lab bench to clinic.  We are seeking an entry-level engineer or scientist to join our growing team in St. Louis, Missouri for a six month fellowship.

The fellowship will focus on nanoparticle synthesis, assessment, and modification.  The role spans multiple engineering and scientific disciplines – chemical, biological, mechanical, and electrical – and involves both planning and research at the office desk and hands-on data collection at the lab bench.  An ability to learn and adapt is much more important than existing expertise in any one area.

Responsibilities

While the Fellow’s week-to-week focus areas will shift rapidly to reflect priority changes and new learnings, responsibilities are anticipated to include:

  • Researching and identifying new procedures, test methods, materials, and other resources that may be used to improve the nanoparticle production process
  • Drafting procedures for upcoming experiments, with an eye for detail, repeatability, and resourcefulness as we build out our lab capabilities
  • Executing experimental protocols for nanoparticle synthesis and protein conjugation in a wet lab
  • Analyzing data generated in the lab (using Matlab or Octave if necessary)
  • Communicating progress and results, including formal (authoring written reports on experimental results) and informal (raising a hand when risks are noticed; coordinating work on active projects with team members; brainstorming individually and in a group) communication
  • Iterating on custom lab equipment, including any combination of computer-aided design, 3D printing, basic electronics, and most importantly, creativity

Qualifications

We encourage all interested applicants to apply, even if unsure whether all qualifications are met.

  • Strong ability to independently learn new skills
  • Proven problem-solving talent, including creativity under constraints
  • An ownership mindset: a bent toward filling gaps
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills
  • Strong technical writing ability and high attention to detail
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or engineering field (e.g. Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science) or equivalent experience preferred
    • Strong candidates from other fields will be considered

Benefits

This full-time, six-month role includes a stipend of $4450 per month and comes with a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents.  Other benefits include paid company holidays and individual paid time off.  While this position is an in-person role, flexible work hours (e.g. for childcare pickup) are supported to the greatest extent possible within the constraints of currently running experiments.

In addition, UNandUP encourages participation in professional development activities such as conferences, courses, and seminars.  Engineering Fellows receive one-on-one mentoring from a member of the leadership team.  Fellows who successfully complete the program become preferential candidates in the event that future full-time engineering positions are posted.

UNandUP is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate based upon age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, veteran status, socioeconomic status, or disability.  All are welcome here.
