First-Year Peer Mentors are upper-level students who provide continued positive peer support to help students transition to Texas State socially and academically. Please submit your application through our website: https://mentoring.studentsuccess.txst.edu/become-a-mentor.html 

 

The application deadline is Friday, November 1 at 11:59 p.m. We encourage you to submit your full application, including recommendation(s), sooner than later as we will be reviewing and interviewing applicants on a rolling basis starting mid-October.

 

Peer Mentor Responsibilities:

  • Attend 2 assigned US 1100 and/or ELAR 1300 courses
  • Attend a weekly meeting with the Peer Mentoring team
  • Meet with all mentees at least once a semester (around 30 - 60 mentees, depending on section sizes)
  • Hold 2 hours of office hours to complete administrative duties
  • Hold 2 - 4 hours of Bobcat Study Hours to model good study habits
  • Encourage attendance at academic/social events around campus
  • Help students become familiar with university resources and refer them as needed
  • Assist students in interacting with faculty members
  • Log meeting interactions and submit weekly timesheets
  • Participate in training before the start of the semester and throughout the semester as needed

Peer Mentor Eligibility:

  • Minimum 2.75 Texas State GPA (3.00 GPA preferred)
  • Texas State student for minimum of one academic year (or about 30 credit hours)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Positive attitude
  • Active member of the Texas State community
  • Successful completion of US 1100 preferred
  • 60+ credit hours completed preferred
  • Must be available to attend Peer Mentoring training

 

Peer Mentors will receive a wage of $15.00/hour and may work up to 15 hours a week. We are looking for candidates who can commit to a flexible schedule, as the number of hours each week may vary. Preference will be given to those who do not have other on-campus job commitments.

 

Additionally, you will be required to have one recommendation form (two recommendations preferred) submitted by a full-time Texas State faculty or staff member; recommendation forms from Graduate Assistants or other student staff will not be considered. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications will be reviewed starting mid-October and interviews will start near the end of October. Final offers will be given prior to Thanksgiving break.

Employee Evaluation Process

Student employee will be evaluated by their supervisor. The student employee will participate in a mid-semester evaluation and a summative end of semester evaluation of each semester. 

 

Payrate Determination

Student employee will beginning at the staring pay rate and may increase by .25 cents after two long semesters (fall and spring) of employment with a positive evaluation from the supervisor using the Student Employee Career Readiness form.
