The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT) is now accepting applications for two  Connecticut Careers Trainee positions, with a target class of Transportation Planner 1, within the newly formed Linear Referencing System Unit. This is an exciting entry level opportunity for those interested in managing large geospatial datasets across a multitude of transportation modes.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Full Time, 40 hours per week
  • Monday through Friday
  • Location: the Bureau of Policy & Planning, Roadway Information Systems Office, at the Department of Transportation Headquarters in Newington, CT.  
  • Reports to a Transportation Supervising Planner or employee of a higher level. 
  • P-4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit
  • This position is eligible to apply for telework after successful completion of the working test period, and thereafter, in accordance with the Telework Policy which can be found here. Employees in their initial working test period must work on site in the office.

THE ROLE:

  • The Linear Referencing System Unit is responsible for keeping accurate current and historical data on almost 22,000 miles of public roads in Connecticut.  Through various efforts data is collected and validated on a project level basis for state and local roadways. The unit is responsible for updating and maintaining the Department’s linear referencing system (LRS) and the Transportation Intelligence Gateway (TIG).  The unit is also responsible for tracking, documenting, and maintaining all identified roadway asset data for use in meeting reporting requirements including, but not limited to: the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS).  This data supports various critical Department functions including: asset management, project prioritization and coordination, financial tracking, funding eligibility, safety analysis, Federal and State reporting requirements, and performance management, among others. 
  • The positions require working collaboratively with unit and office staff, and with other offices within the Department of Transportation, as well as public entities to collect, model, enhance, analyze, report, and expand the Roadway Inventory features and assets that are contained within the network. The positions will assist with the collection of data from a variety of sources and manage that information within specialized software platforms and databases.  These positions will assist in meeting all Federal requirements outlined in FHWA’s All Roads Network of Linear Referenced Data (ARNOLD), Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS), and Model Inventory of Roadway Elements (MIRE) initiatives.

  • Eligibility for promotion to the target classification of Transportation Planner 1 is earned upon successful completion of the training program.

Target class: Transportation Planner 1 
 

  • Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree will serve a two (2) year training program.
  • Candidates with a Master’s degree in a closely related field may be eligible for a shorter training period.
