About the Position:
Under the general direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) leading the Cultural Studies Unit, the District Native American Coordinator (DNAC), is responsible for developing cultural resource studies as well as, reviewing and/or identifying potential effects of transportation projects on tribal heritage. As the key point of contact for tribal cultural, environmental, and historical preservation considerations, the DNAC works closely with local tribal cultural leaders and representatives to facilitate coordination with the District. The DNAC coordinates closely with other Caltrans departments and staff such as the Headquarters Native American Cultural Studies (NACS) Branch and District Native American Liaisons (DNALs) to stay informed on regulations and policy for making recommendations to management, as well as to facilitate Caltrans’ tribal government diplomacy. The DNAC supports project-level cultural and archaeological studies and assists with the more complex consultation scenarios under Section 106 PA, 5024 MOU, and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
