Outdoor Educator

Position Summary:

Outdoor Educators at Camp Woodie are key to delivering engaging Leopold classes and serving as secondary caregivers for our campers. They are responsible for designing, teaching, and coordinating these classes, ensuring that each session is educational and enjoyable. In addition to leading the Leopold classes, Outdoor Educators play a vital role in guiding campers through their personal growth and skill development, fostering a supportive and enriching environment that enhances both their outdoor experience and personal development.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Deliver Leopold classes that foster a deep appreciation and respect for the natural environment and conservation, ensuring participants have a meaningful and educational experience.
  • Ensure the daily safety and well-being of all program participants. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in assigned areas to provide a safe and hygienic environment.
  • Manage program materials and resources effectively, and communicate with the Leopold Director regarding equipment needs and updates.
  • Provide daily care for all Camp Leopold animals, ensuring their health and well-being.
  • Assist with coordinating and facilitating large group activities, contributing to a smooth and enjoyable experience for all campers.
  • Provide assistance with operations at the canteen and pro shop, including inventory management and customer service.
  • Maintain high standards of safety and health in all activities for yourself, campers, and other staff/volunteers.
  • Model professionalism and serve as a positive role model for both campers and staff. Adhere to camp procedures and practices including safety, sportsmanship, appropriate behavior, schedule adherence, and cleanliness.
  • Contribute to the camp staff team in delivering and supervising evening programs, special events, overnights, all-camp activities, and camp functions.
  • Ensure that Counselors-In-Training assigned to your cabin/area receive valuable and relevant experiences.
  • Create a positive and enthusiastic atmosphere for campers and staff during all camp activities.
  • Provide exceptional and consistent customer service to all camp guests.
  • Assist campers and staff in following emergency procedures (fire, evacuation, illness, injury, etc.) as needed.
  • Embrace the role with energy and enthusiasm to ensure a fun and memorable experience for all.
  • Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of camp facilities and equipment.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Camp Leadership Team.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Currently certified or willing to become certified in First Aid/CPR before the summer (certification will be provided if needed).
  • Successfully complete staff training prior to the start of camp.
  • Observe camper behaviors, assess appropriateness, apply effective management techniques, and enforce safety and emergency procedures.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and integrity; ability to interact effectively with people at all levels.
  • Take initiative, be flexible, use sound judgment, and work harmoniously with others.
  • Lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities.
  • Exhibit strong communication, organizational, and human relations skills.
  • Willingness to work with diverse populations.
  • Exemplify the values of “Respect Yourself, Respect Others, and Respect Camp Woodie.”

Education and Experience:

  • Currently working towards a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years old

Physical Requirements:

  • Lead and participate in recreational activities which may include running, throwing, kicking & shooting
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental weather and program threats, as well as maintaining constant supervision of campers, staff, and volunteers 
  • Ability to lift and/or maneuver weights of up to 35lbs
  • Physical ability to respond to emergency situations and follow procedures.
  • Endurance including:  prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching
  • Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities
  • Requires daily exposure to the sun, heat, insect and animals
