2024/2025 Wastewater and Construction Management Internship

About Our Job

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) has various divisions to enhance the quality of life in Denver by efficiently delivering effective, high-quality, safe, and equitable public infrastructure and services.

One of DOTI’s divisions is the Wastewater Management, which oversees all aspects of wastewater functions, including the construction, operation, and maintenance of the City’s sanitary and storm systems. The Wastewater Management implements city wastewater policies, establishes cost controls and fees to support operational requirements and capital improvement projects, and responds to customer inquiries. What You’ll Do 

As an Intern, you will work on various projects and tasks to help you understand wastewater management's construction, operation, and maintenance.

As an intern, you will get to experience:

Partner with Engineers, Project Managers, and Project Inspectors with inspections and documentation.

Collaborate on the Manhole Rehabilitation Program and Preventive Sanitary & Storm Lining Program.

Assist with inspecting manholes to assess the need for manhole rehabilitation.

Locate storm and sanitary manholes to ensure accessibility for future projects.

GIS Map creation to document completed wastewater construction projects

Seasonal Green Infrastructure, Water Quality, and Stormwater inspections to ensure they are properly functioning

Manage material and equipment inventory.

Work on cost estimation of construction projects.

Other ad hoc projects aligned to the division’s initiatives.

 

Our ideal candidate will have/be:

Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Architectural Engineering, Project/Construction Management, Civil engineering, or a related field.

Ability to intern 25-30 hours per week starting immediate for 12 months; with the possibility of intern extension after that pending need, interest, and performance.

Ability to carry 10 lbs.

Ability and interest in working outdoors.

Comfortable with entering confined spaces containing wastewater (sanitary and stormwater). 

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Critical thinker with strong attention to detail.

Strong knowledge of Excel and MS Office Suite.

Exposure to ArcGIS and AutoCAD.

Ability to consistently follow safety rules/policies and the appropriate usage of personal protection equipment (training provided by DOTI).

 Education Requirement:  Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion).  

Experience: None  

Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.  

License/Certification Requirement:  By position, may require a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment

Location Flexibility 

The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the field several days a week and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.
