R&D Laboratory Coordinator

R&D Laboratory Coordinator

Elemental Enzymes is seeking a dedicated R&D Laboratory Coordinator to support the vital research and development activities in our St. Louis-based agricultural laboratory. This role helps to ensure the efficient operation of our R&D laboratory by providing comprehensive support to our laboratory scientists, allowing them to focus on advancing our innovative research. The Laboratory Coordinator will be responsible for managing laboratory inventory, equipment, and warehouse support to ensure seamless daily operations.

 

Job Description

 

Inventory and Supplies Management

  • Manage, organize, and restock laboratory inventory supplies and consumables in both the main laboratory and warehouse.
  • Maintain accurate inventory management systems, including storage and upkeep of supplies, consumables, and labware.
  • Aseptically prepare solutions, reagents, liquid media, and media plates for general laboratory use, as well as at the request of laboratory personnel.

Equipment Maintenance and Inventory

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance, cleaning and sterilization of laboratory equipment, including freezer thaws, biosafety cabinet UV sterilization, and pipette disinfection.
  • Track and oversee equipment maintenance schedules and inventory, ensuring timely servicing and calibration of freezers, incubators, and other large lab equipment.
  • Coordinate with third-party vendors for equipment maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Support laboratory space improvements and facility efficiency efforts in collaboration with the Lab Manager.

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), including accurate recordkeeping, equipment verification, and quality control.
  • Assist in the upkeep of safety records, tracking and logging Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and organizing safety data binders.
  • Support laboratory safety and compliance initiatives by completing weekly and monthly safety checklists.
  • Assist with enforcing Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) standards and participate as a member of the Safety Committee.

Laboratory Operations Support

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the lab, including autoclaving laboratory dishes, waste disposal, and recycling.
  • Maintain electronic laboratory notebooks, updating weekly logs and inventory records.
  • Aid in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, systems, and standards to ensure laboratory efficiency, safety, and compliance with federal and state regulations.

Team Support and Development

  • Assist with the Elemental Enzymes internship program by mentoring Lab Assistants.
  • Provide job shadowing opportunities and training for Lab Assistants on daily and weekly lab operations.

 

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Microbiology, OR 2+ years of experience in technical or administrative laboratory operations (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Operational knowledge of common wet lab equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage time and oversee daily laboratory operations.
  • Eagerness to learn, adopt new methods, and continuously develop skills.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Lifting: Ability to regularly lift or move +50 pounds. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Repetitive motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or finger, picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.
  • Light work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
  • Those with this position must be able to work in Biosafety Level 2 Laboratory which can cause more illnesses to those with immunocompromised systems.
