Policy & Research Intern

The New York City Council, an equal opportunity employer, is seeking a Policy & Research Intern to work in the Office of the Speaker.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Policy & Research Intern will play a critical role in supporting the Office of the Speaker by conducting research, analyzing data, writing memos and reports, and contributing to the development and execution of policy initiatives and activities aligned with the Council's strategic priorities. The intern will work directly with the Senior Advisor on high-visibility issues and emerging topics.

  • Conduct comprehensive data collection and analysis on key policy areas related to the Council's legislative and budget priorities.
  • Synthesize findings and present key insights to inform decision-making, maintaining a repository of research and data for ongoing reference.
  • Draft policy memoranda, reports, and outlines that contribute to the Office’s legislative and budget priorities and support response to high-priority issues.
  • Under supervision, represent the Speaker's Office in meetings with external stakeholders, including leadership and staff in the non-profit and academic sectors, as well as other governmental entities.
  • Attend policy briefings, external meetings, and events; prepare detailed notes and summaries for senior staff.
  • Monitor news, social media, and emerging trends, identifying issues of relevance to the Council's priorities, and briefing senior staff on pertinent developments.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for on-going and ad hoc virtual and in-person meetings.
  • Distribute reports and other formal communications, ensuring accuracy and clarity.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team environment, contributing to the overall success of policy and research functions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preference for college graduates, though current students with strong qualifications will be considered.
  • A minimum of one year of research experience, particularly in policy analysis, is strongly preferred.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, including multitasking and time management in a fast-paced environment.
  • A demonstrated commitment to learning and adapting to new issues and challenges.
  • Bilingual proficiency is an asset.
  • Proficient in using software programs such as Microsoft Office and other data management tools.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment.
