Motion Design Fellow (January 2025)
Business Insider is hiring a motion design fellow to work on videos and create animations for the So Expensive video team.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This paid role requires you to work for 40 hours a week. Fellowships can be hybrid, and we expect New York-based fellows to come into our offices at least twice per week.
The Role & Team:
The fellow in this role will spend their time creating original and creative animations for our show So Expensive.
Our videos cover a range of subjects, including food, travel, design, art, beauty, and more. Candidates should be familiar with our existing videos and eager to contribute work in our style. Recent examples include:
- Why Single-Origin Coffee Is So Expensive
- Why Chiso Kimonos Are So Expensive
- Why Royal Quinoa Is So Expensive
- Why Olympic Curling Stones Are So Expensive
The ideal candidate should have knowledge of After Effects and a passion for animation. They will work closely with videographers and producers to create videos for a wide audience across the web and various social media platforms including Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Reels.
This role reports directly to the Deputy Executive Producer for the show and sits on the larger video team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Quickly execute visually engaging animations that elevate our videos, which will be shared across platforms
- Identify and create relevant graphics such as graphs, maps, text elements, motion graphics templates, backgrounds, and more
- Collaborate with the larger news team on pre-production, production, and post-production workflows
- Possess strong skills in Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, and After Effects. Proficiency in Illustrator and other Adobe software is a plus
The ideal candidate has:
- A passion for visual storytelling through animations
- An ability to quickly storyboard from scripts into videos that will be shared across platforms
- Proofreading and copywriting skills
- Experience shooting with Canon, Panasonic, and Sony cameras is a plus
- Experience video editing in Adobe Premiere is a plus
Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:
- A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
- Familiarity with digital and social media
- The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
- A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun
Salary & Benefits:
- Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
- PTO and paid holidays
- Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
