Environmental Protection Specialist

In this Environmental Protection Specialist position, you will serve as an Environmental Protection Specialist on the disaster field operations team within the Region 9 Mitigation Division. Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Advising regional and disaster leadership on how to avoid or minimize adverse impacts to the environment and comply with environmental planning and historic preservation responsibilities.
  • Advising FEMA and state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) government officials on all matters to comply with Environmental Planning and Historic Preservation (EHP) laws, regulations, Executive orders, and public notice requirements.
  • Providing compliance advice for FEMA-funded activities related to Environmental and Historic Preservation (EHP) laws, regulations, and end executive orders, including, but not limited to the Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and Executive Orders 11898 (Floodplains), 11990 (Wetlands), and 12898 (Environmental Justice), and 13690 (Federal Flood Risk Management Standard).
  • Developing environmental documentation and reports, to include developing, reviewing, and finalizing consultation and agreement documents, standard operating procedures, and tools related to environmental and historic preservation compliance.
  • Analyzing/synthesizing information using tools such as GIS and other EHP data and applications.

To qualify for this Environmental Protection Specialist position at the IC-11 level, you must possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the IC-09 level in the Federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. Experience may be obtained in the federal government, a state or local government, or private sector, and must demonstrate the following:

  1. Reviewing documentation to ensure compliance with applicable environmental and historic preservation laws and regulations; and
  2. Providing technical guidance related to environmental or historic preservation problems, projects, programs, or functions to management officials; and
  3. Developing deliverables such as detailed reports, presentations, and agreement documents.
