HJF is seeking an Associate Scientist that will be responsible for developing and supervising research projects and investigating the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems.
This position will be in support of Radiation Countermeasure Program in the Scientific Research Division at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Responsibilities
- Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocol.
- Responsible for planning and executing Radiation Countermeasure Screening and Development study in mice exposed to whole body gamma-radiation in coordination with other lab personnel
- Responsible of planning and executing Radiation Countermeasure Screening and Development study in mice exposed to partial body radiation using Linear accelerator (LINAC)
- Responsible of planning and executing Radiation Countermeasure Screening and Development study in mice exposed to mixed-field whole body radiation
- Responsible of planning and executing Radiation Countermeasure Screening in minipig with cutaneous radiation injury
- Responsible for presenting new ideas to understand the mechanism of action of promising Radiation Countermeasure Drugs, develop hypothesis, design, and implements experimental protocols
- Develop new technologies, write IACUC protocols and amendments.
- Expect to Perform specialized laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols which will involve specialized procedures such as western blotting, ELISA, molecular analysis of specific RNA transcripts by quantitative RT-PCR, and flow cytometry.
- Processes and interprets experimental data.
- Responsible for managing day to day experiments and mentors technical and junior level staff.
- Coordinates with other technical and professional staff.
- Responsible for Data analysis to understand the mechanism of action of the promising countermeasure, train junior staffs for data analysis using GraphPad prism.
- Contributes to new grant and funding applications. Assists in writing reports for FDA submission, quarterly and annual reports to sponsors, participates in the teleconference with Sponsors, write manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- PhD in a related scientific discipline
- Minimum of 0-2 years experience required
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques
- Extensive knowledge of working with rodents, animal injections, oral feedings, harvesting blood and tissues
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures
- Ability to work independently as as well as in a team and may supervise others.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public trust.
Physical Capabilities
- Lifting: Requires lifting materials over 25 lbs.
- Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
- Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.
Work Environment
- This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
