Winter Co-op/Infectious Disease Research

Department Description:

The mission of Infectious Disease Research at GSK is to build a healthy future with innovative medicines. Infectious Disease Research (IDR) is pursuing both treatment and prevention medicines for some of the most devastating infectious diseases of today, and we are doing this by pursuing innovative approaches including targeting bacterial, fungal, viral and host targets and progressing modalities that have not traditionally been pursued for ID.

Job Description:

We are seeking a talented Co-op student with understanding of drug discovery and development process and microbial biological pathways and mechanisms to support our endeavor to develop and register new medicines for the treatment of bacterial and fungal diseases to combat the rise in antimicrobial resistance. As a development scientist based in the Clinical Microbiology group within IDR, this role will provide YOU the opportunity to experience key research activities to progress YOUR career.

These responsibilities include some of the following: 

  • Review, interpret and analysis of microbiology data from Phase 1 to 3 clinical trials, including quantitative bacterial culture, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and molecular characterization of bacterial /fungal isolates.
  • Work collaboratively within cross-functional project teams to enable the development and registration of new medicines for the treatment of bacterial and fungal diseases.
  • Provide support for writing, compiling and reviewing various clinical microbiology regulatory reports.
  • Execute search of literature including the use of AI to identify new technologies to study development of resistance of both traditional and non-traditional antibiotics.

Minimum Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, or related disciplines.
  • Experience in one of more of the following: scientific method, data analysis, report writing and presentation skills.
  • Interest in infectious diseases, microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, bioengineering or a field relevant to drug discovery and development.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the 6-month assignment (January ~ June 2025).
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible. 

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Knowledge and experience in microbiology
  • High interest in learning drug discovery and development processes
  • Strong work ethic with attention to detail and desire to carry out independent hypothesis generation and testing
  • A proactive and highly self-motivated self-starter with strong organizational, analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively individually and in fast-paced team/matrix environments
  • Proficient with standard office products including Excel and PowerPoint

Benefits:

  • While GSK embraces a flexible work environment, we do require certain positions to be onsite. Candidates who are hired for an on-site role or hybrid role, and reside outside of 50-miles from their assigned work location, are eligible for relocation stipend. This is a one-time payment to help offset housing & relocation expenses. Please refer to the position details for the requirements of each position.
