Data Scientist / Analyst

Thompson Gray, Inc. is seeking a Data Scientist / Analyst for a Department of Defense (DoD) project office integrating resource management data and systems (finance, acquisition, manpower).

Job Description:
The Data Scientist will be responsible for collaborating with business analysts and IT specialists to build a data analytics environment with Microsoft 365 and Azure cloud tools. The Data Scientist will support and architect an environment populated by 50+ data sources, 300+ data tables and 10,000+ data points across 7-8 different lines of business. New projects require establishing data connections to new source data (APIs, Azure SQL, etc.), data cleansing and normalization, data modeling and data architecture of an integrated universe of transactions. Later phases include building advanced data analytics and dashboards from the normalized data using Microsoft toolsets; primarily Power BI, with multiple additional toolsets available (R Studio, Jupyter notebooks, Visual Studio, etc.). The Data Scientist will work closely with our technical and functional staff and the client user community to establish detailed requirements for data management and visualization.

Responsibilities include:

  • Participate in all aspects of the application lifecycle: requirements analysis and definition, data design, architecture and integration as well as data visualization and advanced analytics
  • Produce and support a Microsoft tools cloud-based PaaS data architecture and environment, especially Power BI
  • Produce data models based on business requirements (star schemas, snowflake schemas, UML diagrams, relational database design, etc.).
  • Produce a data analytics platform for data reporting and visualization across multiple integrated lines of business with dynamic and flexible ad-hoc reporting, historical trending, predictive analytics, and others
  • Analyze large, complex systems and data to identify semantic gaps, performance bottlenecks, and data errors as well as uncover opportunities to improve efficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to derive hierarchical relationships from undocumented, flat data
  • Lead efforts to design, implement, and support enterprise scale data analytics

Required Skills:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • BS degree in Data Science, Computer Science or related field/equivalent experience
  • IT experience including experience in development of large-scale, complex data architectures
  • Knowledge of Data Science and Data Analytics concepts and tools
  • Knowledge of Data Management and Data Architecture concepts
  • Experience in creation of data models 

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Power BI
  • Experience with DoD and knowledge of DoD standards a plus
  • Demonstrated experience translating business and technical requirements into comprehensive data strategies and analytic solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to adequately plan and meet delivery objectives and maintain adequate service levels in a highly dynamic, complex environments

U.S. Citizenship is required. A current DoD security clearance of SECRET or above is highly desired.
