Civil Engineering Intern

This is advanced sub-professional work performed in the office, field or laboratory. Work is assigned based on the employee's level of education. Work is directed and reviewed by a Professional Engineer.

THIS IS A LIMITED FULL-TIME SUMMER INTERN POSITION (NO BENEFITS)

This position will begin from mid-May 2025 - mid August 2025. We are flexible to accommodate the start date based on student's schedule.

The days and hours for this position: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm

Bargaining Unit: No Union Representation

 

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Performs intern-level work assigned by the department.
  • Conduct on-site traffic investigations of traffic sight distances and safety concerns.   Investigations will lead to work directives for traffic sign installations, clearing site obstructions, pavement markings and signal modifications.
  • Perform analysis of bridge inspections, initiating small projects for bridge repairs with review and approval of work to be performed by a Professional Engineer.
  • AutoCAD work may include updating plan details and design of neighborhood water main replacements
  • Plan, estimate, and prepare projects under the $12 million annual Pavement Preservation program. Final project review and approval to be performed by a Professional Engineer
  • Completion of work assignments may require operation of a vehicle.

 Requirements of Work:

  • Level of knowledge appropriate to the work being assigned.
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information
  • Ability to lean and reach as needed to read and interpret plans and specifications from a print that may be as large as 36 by 48 inches with information printed as small as 20 characters per inch
  • Ability to research, analyze, summarize and report findings
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather
  • Ability to tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds, construction and windy conditions
  • Ability to cover uneven terrain, go up and down stairs, and otherwise maneuver around construction sites
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and/or the public
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements for the specific internship assignment
  • An employee will not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

 

 Required Experience and Training:

 

  • Candidate must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or program in Engineering
  • A current cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Experience should include effective communication, both orally and in writing
  • Candidate must maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without need of a sponsorship

 

Preferred Experience and Training 

Candidate currently enrolled in an undergraduate or program in Civil Engineering

  • Prior experience in AutoCAD
  • Preferred candidates will be a sophomore level standing in the 2024/2025 academic school year.
