Post Masters RA - Synthetic Biology (9739)

Overview

 

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.


Responsibilities

 

The Synthetic Biology Team of the Biological Sciences Division (BSD) at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking to hire enthusiastic and skilled post-masters research associates. Applicants with research experience in experimental synthetic biology, microbiology, or metabolic engineering are especially encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will join a team of researchers seeking to understand how post-translational modification of proteins impacts production of chemicals by engineered bacteria. This work will involve both developing cutting edge genetic and analytical tools to measure and rationally modulate post-translational modification of proteins. We are innovating synthetic biology and metabolic engineering research at PNNL by integrating high-throughput genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, recombinant protein expression, and fluorescence techniques to understand what factors allow for the modification of proteins with acetyl groups and how we can engineer microbial production chassis for higher rates, titer, and yields of platform chemicals. Selected applicants will work closely with PNNL and external collaborator scientists to engineer bacteria with enhanced stress resilience and altered cell membranes. This position aligns with the following BSD Strategic Science Objectives: identify molecular dark matter and elucidate its impacts and identify control points for manipulating multi-scale systems.

 

These positions are for full-time, limited-term employment. The duration of these appointments is one year with an option of extension (for an additional year) subject to project funding and individual performance.

The contributions of EBSD staff are elevating the science behind PNNL's mission to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security. The Biological Sciences Division (BSD) is an organization of about 220 staff and is one of four divisions within EBSD. Our researchers study the phenotypes of multi-scale biological systems to understand how their integrated components function and respond to change. BSD is structured into four technically focused groups: (1) Translational Omics, (2) Structure, Function & Design, (3) Multi-scale Systems Science, and (4) Computational Biology. The success of BSD is enabled by its broad research portfolio and multi-disciplinary workforce in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, earth science, biomedical science, molecular measurement science, computational biology, statistics, and software engineering. The division thrives on collaborative team science. By harnessing a diverse range of skills and perspectives, our team is equipped to identify biology-based solutions to address challenges in ecosystem science, the bioeconomy, human health, and biodefense.


Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred candidates will have a Master’s degree in a life science or engineering field and 1+ years research experience in molecular biology, microbiology, engineering, or machine learning.
  • Degrees of interest include molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical engineering, microbiology, genetics or a related field.
  • Some combination of the following skills or experience are preferred: bacterial culture of non-model bacteria, molecular cloning (Restriction/Ligation, Gibson Assembly, Golden Gate Assembly), genome engineering (lambda Red, CRISPR-Cas9, CRISPRi), measurement of extracellular metabolites with HPLC, and cell density and fluorescence assays via microtiter plate reader or cytometer. Attention to detail, ability to work in a collaborative environment, and strong communication, organization, and documentation skills are expected.
