Play a key role in restoration efforts, particularly focusing on the Skagit and Samish River estuary. 

Independently conduct biological studies and provide critical analysis of data related to fish, wildlife, and habitat management. 

Engage with the community to build support, track the progress of restoration projects, seek funding opportunities, and collaborate on prioritizing initiatives for fish and wildlife recovery.

 

What to Expect-

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Restoration Biologist will, 

Provide technical assistance for restoration projects to achieve conservation goals, and coordinate with scientists,  fish/wildlife managers, conservation districts, Fish Recovery Boards, local, state, and federal agencies, stakeholders, and the public around recovery goals:

  • Assist in the implementation, funding, and reporting of projects designed to restore, improve, or create fish and/or wildlife habitats.
  • Provide technical consultation to internal staff, stakeholders, partners and co-managers around habitat restoration opportunities in support of the Senior Restoration Specialist.
  • Support the development and execution of communication plans for restoration planning and implementation.
  • Provide information on fish life histories and habitat requirements, aquatic ecosystem functions, and promote conservation of fish and wildlife resources to stakeholders, partners and co-managers.

Provide field, technical, and administrative support to the Senior Restoration Specialist:

  • Select standardized statistical and research procedures, evaluate and analyze collected data, formulate conclusions and write summaries and draft technical report sections for review by supervisors.
  • Develop monitoring plans for restoration sites with partners and staff. 
  • Collect pre- and post-restoration data at restoration sites in the Skagit watershed.  Recommend adaptive management strategies and support funds identification for implementation of adaptive management strategies. 
  • Analyze data, interpret results, and draft annual technical reports reflecting conclusions. 
  • Provide recommendations to Senior Restoration Specialist for management actions

 

Working Conditions: 

Work Setting, including hazards: 

  • Work is performed in an office and outdoor environment.
  • Fieldwork requires knowledge of operation of field equipment (including and not limited to GarminInReach, GPS, cell phone, etc.).
  • Operate a vehicle in off-road driving conditions.
  • Work in remote forested and aquatic environments which may consist of 8 - 10 hour days, for several days in a row.
  • Walk over rough terrain for short distances (less than one [1] mile) regularly or occasionally over long distances (several miles).
  • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.

Schedule: Typically, Monday - Friday 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.  These hours are flexible to accommodate seasonal workload or additional duties as assigned by the Senior Restoration Specialist. Incumbent may request and work a flexible work schedule, subject to supervisory approval. Willingness and ability to work extended hours as necessary to complete assignments.

Travel Requirements: In the field 25-50% time doing project site visits or traveling to meetings throughout the state. Periods of extended, evening and overnight travel may be required, and may exceed the standard 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. work day.

Tools and Equipment: Personal flotation device (PFD), rubber knee boots, cell phone, Emergency Communication devices, GPS units, waders, gloves, reflective safety vest, hard hats, safety glasses, rain gear, computer, state-assigned work vehicle.

Customer Interactions: Interact with agency staff, other government agencies, tribes, stakeholders, restoration partners, funders, and the public.

 

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: 

A Bachelor’s Degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

AND 

One (1) year of professional experience in one (1) or more of the following: 

  • Working in a natural resource agency working with diverse stakeholder groups to achieve conservation goals. 
  • Working in fish management or research, wildlife management or research, or habitat management or research.
  • Working as a Fish and Wildlife Biologist 1.     

Please Note: 

  • Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
  • A Master’s Degree in the applicable science will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

 

Certifications/Licenses:

Valid Driver’s License.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:

  • Knowledge of ecological processes pertinent to the Pacific Northwest including natural history of Washington salmonids. 
  • Demonstrated ability to build professional rapport and partnerships with the public, colleagues, tribes, and local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to use GIS software to create, view, analyze, modify and map geographic data.
