Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Welding Engineering Postdoctoral Researcher in Materials Science/Materials Engineer/Metallurgy to work in our The Department of Materials Science and Manufacturing (MS&M) reporting to the Project Investigator. Idaho National Laboratory (INL) seeks to bolster its current expertise in joining and welding of current and exotic materials. INL has traditionally excelled in the research, development and characterization of materials that support multiple types of advanced energy generation, storage, efficiency and security.

You will need strong experience in joining and welding technologies, and the ability to utilize it for advanced manufacturing purposes. You are expected to support existing programs in fusion welding (arc, laser, etc.), including dissimilar metal/material joints. The end applications for these welds and materials are typically focused on components in harsh environments (e.g., extremes of temperature, pressure, high strain rate applications, etc.) as found in power generation (e.g., nuclear, fossil fuel, solar, etc.) and protection applications such as ballistic armor and blast protection associated with National Homeland Security. 

Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide input to departmental business plans and performance of duties of a line management Principal Investigator for assigned work activities.
  • Support establishment of beneficial collaborative relationships with customers, technical representatives and field operations.
  • Be a technical resource to others, including mentorship and provision of oversight to junior level scientists.
  • Provide major contributions to the generation of reports, publications, and proposals and contribution to the generation of additional proposals and concepts submitted for external funding.
  • Conduct and document work at an appropriate quality level, including collection and interpretation of laboratory data, planning of research tasks, along with assessing and applying many research techniques to those tasks.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy or comparable disciplines
  • PhD requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years
  • Experience with joining and welding technologies utilized for advanced manufacturing purposes.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English

Desired Requirements: 

  • Experience in advanced manufacturing and 3D metal printing (on current methods including single and multi-wire weld arc additive manufacturing (WAAM and m-WAAM)/ gas melt arc (GMA) additive manufacturing), casting/solidification and thermomechanical processing to support alloy development.
  • Experience in materials and manufacturing process development for high-strength, lightweight and creep/oxidation-resistant metal alloys.
  • Ability to integrate modeling and simulations into development of welding and joining processes.
  • Experience with materials and advanced materials processing approaches.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Job Information: 

  • The salary for this position is $96,900.00 annually. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
