Legislative Intern

Pay Rate: $18.00/hr.

Workdays & Hours: This is a temporary position with the City of Fort Worth. The Intern is scheduled to begin the first full week of January 2025 and work through May 2025.

A Legislative Intern job is available with the City of Fort Worth - Legislative Affairs. The purpose for this temporary position is to assist the Legislative Affairs Manager in administering the legislative program for the 89th Session of the Texas State Legislature. Many students who have previously interned in this office have used the experience to gain full-time employment either in the Capitol Complex or other local governments.  

College credit may be available based on university guidelines and policy. 

Location: 823 Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 

The Legislative Intern job responsibilities include:

  • Analyze proposed legislation bills and amendments.
  • Maintain updated legislative analyses in database.
  • Monitor media coverage pertaining to legislation and related issues.
  • Assist in preparing reports, writing speeches and writing press releases.
  • Research existing statutes and policy issues in ascertaining legislative impacts.
  • Monitor legislative committee hearings.
  • Attend legislative hearings and meetings at the Texas Capitol.
  • Assist with other policy related projects. Some clerical duties will also be involved.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in undergraduate studies related to Law, English, Communications, Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, Regulatory Affairs or a related degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ideal intern will be at least in their sophomore year of undergraduate studies.
  • Excellent computer skills (especially with spreadsheets).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong research, writing and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle and organize large quantities of data.
