Teach Elementary Students This Summer: MTR Camp Literacy Fellowship

  • Fellowship Dates: June 1 - 28, 2025
  • Location: Memphis, TN (housing is provided)
  • Benefits: $1500 stipend, housing provided, $300 food stipend & some meals provided, hands-on teaching experience & quality professional development

The MTR Camp Literacy Fellowship is a paid summer learning experience designed for undergraduate sophomores and juniors in college who are passionate about equal education. Fellows serve at MTR Camp, where Rising 1st-4th grade students receive literacy instruction in a fun-filled camp experience. Fellows also receive training in the science of reading, gain meaningful experience and the opportunity to teach in under-resourced neighborhoods, and are exposed to gospel-centered community development strategies. During their stay in Memphis, Fellows will also live together in campus housing, receive living and food stipends, and get plentiful opportunities to explore the rich history and culture of Memphis. 

MTR Camp Literacy Fellowship distinctives:

  • Gain real-world teaching experience as an educator in training with the guidance of MTR staff and a mentor teacher
  • Receive training in effective, research-based teaching and literacy practices.
  • Exposure to MTR’s Residency program.
  • Engage in conversations across racial lines, in deep community, concentrated within a historical and biblical context.
  • Develop Christian Community Education values and practices.
  • $1,500 stipend
  • Housing at a local dormitory is provided.
  • $300 food stipend, dinners provided at college dining hall, and orientation week breakfast and lunch provided.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements for acceptance to the 2024 MTR Camp Literacy Fellowship:

  • An undergraduate sophomore or junior student enrolled in a four-year college/university. Juniors (rising seniors) are preferred.
  • High energy, teachable individuals who are interested in teaching in an under-resourced environment.
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency.
  • GPA: 2.75 or above.

Complete an online application that requires a resume, one recommendation, and a brief essay - before the November 21st deadline. All supporting documents must be submitted by the deadline.

More About Memphis Teacher Residency 

Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR) recruits, trains, and supports effective teachers in a Christian context. MTR believes educational inequality is among the greatest social justice and civil rights issues of today. MTR offers 3 ways to get involved in the work of Equal Education: 1 job for college seniors and alumni and 2 paid summer internships/fellowships for current college students.

Residency: The Memphis Teacher Residency program is designed for college graduates of any major. During the residency year, participants train with a mentor teacher, receive coaching, and earn a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) through Christian Brothers University, paid for by MTR. Residents also receive free housing and a living stipend. MTR helps residents get licensed and find a job in a partner school in Memphis. Graduates of the program commit to teach in Memphis high needs schools for three additional years, in which they continue to receive coaching support and professional development through MTR. MTR Camp Literacy Fellowship: The MTR Camp Literacy Fellowship is a four-week summer learning experience designed for undergraduate students interested in working towards equal education. Fellows serve at MTR camp, where elementary-aged students receive literacy instruction in a fun-filled camp experience. Fellows also receive training in the science of reading, meaningful opportunities to teach, and exposure to gospel-centered community development strategies. Marjorie Lee Browne STEM Fellowship: The Marjorie Lee Browne STEM Education Fellowship is a four-week summer program designed for undergraduate students of color who have a passion for STEM education. Fellows serve as co-teachers and counselors for STEM Discovery camp, a program for rising 7th and 8th graders focused on mathematics and problem solving. Fellows also receive training and instruction on the intersection of faith, the Civil Rights movement and education. During their stay in Memphis, fellows receive housing and a living stipend.
