Urban Neighborhood Initiatives (UNI) is a non-profit community development organization located in Southwest Detroit. UNI was incorporated in 1997 as a way to offer more resources to families who live in the nearby Springwells neighborhood.
Our mission is to create a safe and thriving neighborhood where people want to live, work and play. Since being founded in 1997 we have served over 20,000 youth and their families. We have a diverse team of staff who are dedicated to supporting our community through education, land stewardship, community leadership, and creating a vibrant economy.
Job Description
Title: Communications Intern
Reports to: Director of Communications & Development
Type of Employment: On-site - Part-time
Start Date: Immediate hire
Hours/week: 12-16 hours/week
Job summary:
The Communications Intern is responsible for working alongside the Director of Communications & Development, the Volunteer Coordinator, and UNI staff to assist with communications, fundraising, and community engagement events. They support keeping UNI’s marketing collateral & material accurate & up-to-date, including but not limited to social media, programs, communications, and events. They will also support donor appreciation and relations, fundraising events, and helping UNI tell our story throughout our platforms.
Summary of essential job functions:
- Create content such as videos, flyers, photos, and graphics for programs, events, digital or other organizational publications as needed.
- Ensures UNI’s Brand is cohesive and portrayed accurately throughout all mailings, social media posts, flyers, etc.
- Scheduling & Posting Content in a timely & effective matter
- Accurately translates materials
- Maintains accurate records of photos, videos, content created and marketing materials
- Assist with donor appreciation strategies in a timely matter
- Plays a supportive role in selection of Heroes for the Heroes of the Neighborhood
- Attend programs and events to take photos and video while creating content for all social media platforms
- Supports the creation of the annual report with Q-Team and UNI staff through brand design & implementation
- Work with UNI staff and programs to provide digital communications workshops, and training when necessary.
- Assist with partnerships and donor engagements when needed
- Other jobs and duties assigned that are related to this role
Minimum requirements:
- Some experience in digital marketing, communications, and graphic design
- Some college experience preferred
- Must have good written and oral communication skill
- Must have strong organizational skills, time management, prioritizing tasks and ability to meet multiple deadlines
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends, when needed to assist with events
- Bilingual in Spanish
- Strong preference for candidates who have previously live and/or worked in southwest Detroit

Compensation
This is a part-time position with an hourly rate of $15-$17. The pay rate will be determined based on experience and qualifications.
