NACDD Public Health AmeriCorps Nevada I Service Member

POSITION OVERVIEW:  

Position Name: NACDD Public Health AmeriCorps Service Member                                      

Position Type/Hours: Three Quarter Time/1200 hours              

In-Person and Hybrid Service Location:  

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH)  

4150 Technology Way, STE 210, Carson City, NV 89706  

+ Affiliated food security and wellness partners across the state of Nevada  

Living Allowance:  $8,074.00 

Education Award:  $5,176.50 

Total Award: $13,250.50 

 

PROGRAM PURPOSE: 

The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) is a national public health non-profit agency focused on improving the health of the public by strengthening state and national leadership and expertise for chronic disease prevention and control. NACDD’s core membership is composed of the 59 State and Territorial Health Department Chronic Disease Directors and their staff who protect the health of the public through primary and secondary prevention efforts and work “upstream” on root causes of chronic conditions. NACDD promotes health and reduces the burden of chronic disease through various programs and initiatives in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity and the Division of Population Health, and a team of nationally recognized experts.  

 

To enhance public health resources across the country and support state and local public health settings respond to and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Public Health AmeriCorps (PHA) program supports the recruitment, training, and development of the next generation of public health leaders. In partnership with State Health Departments, local health departments, other community-based organizations, and/or local YMCAs or YMCA State Alliances, Service Members will be placed across twenty states to advance existing efforts around food and nutrition security, safe physical activity access, social connectedness, and health equity, all within the context of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

 

SPECIFIC SERVICE FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Three PHA Service Members will support the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH), and/or affiliated partners to improve access to physical activity, reducing social isolation and loneliness, and improving food nutrition and security. More specifically the Service Member(s) will assist the Office of Food Security (OFS), the Wellness and Prevention Program (WPP), Nevada’s Council on Food Security (CFS), Clinical and Community Engagement for Women’s Health Connection, and/or the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).  One to two PHA Service Members will embrace Wellness Initiatives that will include the 5210 Program to promote healthier behaviors that can reduce conditions like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s, and cancer in Nevada. 

Responsibilities and functions may include, but not limited to: 

 

Food Security Initiatives: 

  • Planning, implementing, monitoring, and reporting of projects that align with three (3) of the five (5) foundational themes otherwise known as the “pillars” (LEAD, FEED, and BUILD) of the Nevada’s 2023 Food Security Strategic Plan and the specific actions steps in the State Health and Improvement Plan (SHIP) related to Food Security
  • Reviewing and monitoring processes to evaluate the effectiveness of food security activities 
  • Conducting routine analysis of program processes. 
  • Providing technical assistance and data outcomes to food security stakeholders. 
  • Conduct meetings and/or workgroups as necessary  
  • Assist with the development of the 2025 Northern Nevada Food Security Conference and the 2027 Southern Nevada Food Security Conference.  
  • Assist with grant writing to improve food security in Nevada 
  • Assist in developing the notice of funding opportunity for the Fund for a Healthy Nevada.  
  • Supporting the Food for People, Not Landfills (FFPNL) program per NRS 232.4969.  
  • Data management, research, and analysis. 
  • Improving collaboration between WICand OFS.  

 

Wellness Initiatives 

  • Conduct marketing outreach and promote wellness campaigns. 
  • Assist staff with wellness surveys 
  • Data management, research, and analysis 
  • Assist in the development and execution of the 5210 Sustainability Plan.   
  • Assist in the development and execution of a Rural Quad County 5210 marketing plan/strategy.  
  • Assist with grant writing to improve the health of Nevadans.   

 

DESCRIPTION OF ANTICIPATED SERVICE SCHEDULE: 

  • Hybrid - 50% remote 50% in-person 
  • DHHS/DPBH service hours are to be completed within normal business hours Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:00A.M and 5:30P.M. time.  Online Training and in person hours may be approved outside normal business hours. 
  • Affiliated Partner service hours will be coordinated with the Service Member upon hire.  
  • A maximum of 20% of service hours may be training, education, or other similar approved activities 
  • A maximum of 10% of service hours may be fundraising activities 

 

DESIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES  

  • Be willing to learn evaluation, grant writing, and obtain data analysis skills for data and grant reporting. 
  • Must have an adaptive mindset and enjoy brainstorming and collaborating in business development. 
  • Must be adept in critical thinking and analysis to create viable strategies and solutions. 
  • Must possess problem solving skills and communication skills for public speaking and technical assistance

REQUIRED COMMITMENT 

Service members are expected to complete 1200 service hours within a one (1) year timeframe. 

The service year begins 02/03/2025 and ends 02/02/2026.  

 

 

ORIENTATION AND TRAINING  

Members must participate in  

  • Pre-service orientation  
  • PHA-specific training  
  • Program-specific training  
  • Any other trainings deemed necessary by the Host Site supervisor  

Note: Trainings will be limited to 20% or less of PHA Service Members service hours  

 

EVALUATION AND REPORTING 

PHA Service Members will:  

  • Complete quarterly assessments of the PHA Program to include their Host Site experience, trainings, sense of belongingness and inclusivity, interest in pursuing a career in public health, etc. 
  • Complete monthly reflection forms 
  • Participate in quarterly performance evaluation and reviews with their Host Site supervisor 
  • Be required to submit service timesheets biweekly 

 

PUBLIC HEALTH AMERICORPS ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS  

PHA Service Members must:  

  • Be at least 18 years of age at the commencement of service 
  • Have a high diploma or its equivalent  
  • Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States 
  • Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria pursuant to 45 CFR 2540.202 
  • Live within commutable distance of the Host Site to accommodate a hybrid service schedule 

 

OTHER PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS  

  • Prefer upper level (3rd or 4th year) undergraduate student or graduate level student enrolled at a college or university pursuing a public health degree or related degree. 
  • Prefer candidate with grant writing and evaluation experience with strong written and communication skills or willingness to learn. 
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred for at least one (1) of the three (3) positions.
