Research and Development Test Technician

The AFRL Combustion Devices Branch within the Rocket Propulsion Division, Aerospace Systems Directorate, seeks to fill a mid-level position at DX-03 level as Research and Development Test Technician. The position is located at the Rocket Test Site in Leuhman Ridge, Edwards AFB, CA.

For more than 60 years, the AFRL’s Rocket Propulsion Division test site at Edwards AFB has contributed to several technology developments in rocket engines, including those of Saturn, Titan, Space Shuttle, and all major intercontinental ballistic missiles and current space launchers. Today, the site continues to enable technology leaps in hypersonics, solid rocket boosters, in-space propulsion, and liquid rockets for defense and commercial endeavors in support for the Air & Space Forces.

The Combustion Devices branch in AFRL’s Rocket Propulsion Division supports fundamental and applied combustion science & technology for the Air & Space Forces. Our work ranges from massively parallel numerical simulations and machine learning/data assimilation of complex chemically reacting turbulent flows in rocket engines, to additive manufacturing of next-generation space propulsion systems and experimental reacting-flow testing in facilities unique in the nation. We are also heavy users of the Department of Defense’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources.  

We are searching for a high-performing, highly-motivated individual to become a new member of the Combustion Devices Branch. In this role, you will work in an R&D team supporting design, fabrication, assembly, maintenance, and oversight of rocket-engine test stands and test hardware.  

Position duties include, but are not limited to:
• Design, fabrication, and welding of elements of rocket engines and test stands.  
• Assembly of test stands and test hardware. 
• Oversight, operation, and maintenance of complex rocket-engine test facilities.
• Assistance in preparation and execution of experimental test campaigns.     
• Work closely with industry partners. 
• Work closely with our in-house experimental test group of scientists and engineers.

Required Qualifications

• United States Citizenship
• Ability to obtain and maintain the required security clearance
• High-school diploma or equivalent with qualifying experience 
• Combined experience in mechanical fabrication, machining, CAD design, facility management, test-site build up, customer interfacing, health & safety requirements, cryogenic systems, weld inspections, structural welding, and high-pressure precision welding (with corresponding welding certificates), including exotic metal alloys.

• Experience in the rocket industry.
• Ability to work in outside environments as needed, including physical efforts.  
• Familiarity with practical aspects of rocket propulsion.   
• Positive attitude and strong attention to detail. 
• Proficient computer skills.  
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision. 
• Genuine interest in working with a diverse team to solve multidisciplinary applied engineering problems and advance the mission of the Air & Space Forces.
