The Henry L. Stimson Center (Stimson), a nonpartisan global security think tank located in Washington, DC, seeks a part-time intern for our Converging Technology & Global Security program. Reporting to Cindy Vestergaard, Director for the program, this role ensures that our practices support our mission-driven work, align with Stimson's vision, values, strategic goals, standards of conduct, and operational objectives, and demonstrate our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and employee well-being.

About the Program and Position Summary

The Converging Technology & Global Security Program offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in the field non-proliferation, international security and disruptive technology. Efforts are currently focused on studying how of artificial intelligence (AI), additive manufacturing (AM), distributed ledger technology (DLT), and advances in nuclear technology are reshaping international security. Through this exploration, the program aims to promote policymaking to support a successful and inclusive transition of these technologies to advance the next phase of humanity.

Responsibilities:

Internship opportunities include an independent project, presentation, feature article on the website, and the contribution of analysis-driven content to program projects. Stimson interns are encouraged to attend both internal and external events, such as security-related events, technology forums, and resume-building workshops.

Internship responsibilities include research, writing, and editing program publications, coordination of events, representing Stimson at meetings and related events, and administrative support. Strong candidates have a significant interest in disruptive technologies and international security, a strong understanding of disruptive technologies, and strong interest in innovative solutions to nonproliferation challenges. The desired candidate should have experience in research, writing, and editing, great attention to detail, flexibility to work independently and in a team, and a commitment to high-quality work. While not required, other qualities considered an asset would include additional language skills and experience in nonproliferation.

Qualifications - required:

Bachelor's degree in science and technology, political science, international relations or equivalent.

Qualifications - preferred: 

Experience with AI, AM, DLT or other technology related to policy or implementation (tool building).

Note, the internship is part-time, requiring a commitment of 10 hours per week.
