Accounting/Tax Intern

Accounting/Tax Intern – Summer 2025

Opportunity to gain hands-on finance skills and valuable work experience in a dynamic finance environment within one of the top regional Workers Compensation carriers in the US.  Summit Consulting LLC, headquartered in Lakeland FL, is a super-regional Workers Compensation insurance service provider operating in 14 states throughout the Southeast and Southwest US.  We are “the people who know workers’ comp”.  

This Finance Intern role will have time-bound rotations within the Finance group and in select business operational areas (Underwriting, Claims, etc.) within the company.  The internship will also include a project for the intern to advance during the summer, ending in a presentation of the project results at the end of the internship.  In addition to exposure to all areas within Finance and select operational areas, the intern will also have exposure to the design and implementation of a new (Workday) financial system platform including General Ledger, Accounting rules engine and Planning/Forecasting tool.

Rotation Plan:

Financial Reporting (2-3 weeks)

  • Primary focus on premium taxes, rates, and filings
  • Month-end financial close, related reporting, and reconciliations

Planning & Analysis / Treasury Ops Disbursement (2-3 weeks)

  • Budget/expense research for Plan 2026 – Using 12-18 months of financial data history to assist in planning expenses for 2026
  • Month end analysis – Premium reporting, premium audit, workforce (FTE) planning and new business analysis, commissions
  • Accounts Payable – Invoice approval, payments, coding and maintaining log, ACH and manual check creation

Treasury/Cash Management Operations (Premium Recovery) (1-2 weeks)

  • Debt – Job shadowing a collector, learning about the collection process, write-offs and bad debt
  • Overview of the litigation process within collections
  • Retro-billable policies
  • Cash management –Understanding and assisting in day-to-day cash management

Internal Audit (a few days)

  • Introduction to Sarbanes-Oxley controls compliance and reporting procedures
  • Auditing Claims files – learn about our daily audit process
  • Review Departmental Audits

Other (1-2 weeks)

  • Job shadowing in Underwriting, Premium Audit, Sales/Marketing, Claims/Medical
  • Introduction to workers’ compensation insurance
  • Introduction to insurance accounting

Internship Project Ideas:

Final project is to be determined at the start of the internship.  Potential areas of focus for the summer project may include one of the following areas:

assist in premium tax research for upcoming expansion states, assist in Forecast/Plan rates for premium taxes, automating and enhancing existing files and processes across the department, assist in specific component of other strategic objectives within Finance.
