Auditor Evaluator Intern (Student Assistant)

This is an 8-week summer internship program. Candidates must be enrolled as a student in a college or university with upper division undergraduate standing (upper division typically refers to juniors or seniors). This internship is based in Sacramento, CA.

What Will You Do?

As an Auditor Evaluator Intern, you will, under close supervision and in a learning capacity, assist audit teams with the planning, data gathering, analytical tasks, and completion of a segment of an audit. The work includes interaction with auditee staff, other office staff, and supervisors in a collaborative work environment; and thorough and accurate documentation of audit activities and findings.

Specifically, you will:

  • Assist audit teams by learning about evidence and the five elements of a finding to convey strong, compelling arguments that are responsive to the audit objectives and comply with government auditing standards.
  • Maintain professional skepticism by assessing the validity of statements and other evidence as well as identifying the need to conduct further evaluation when necessary.
  • Research and assess federal and state laws and regulations, policies, procedures, processes, best practices, and industry standards to develop the criteria against which the audited agency will be held accountable.
  • Ensure all evidence is collected following the office’s confidentiality policies and procedures to protect confidential information from inappropriate or unauthorized access, use, or disclosure.
  • Generate analytical evidence through qualitative and quantitative analyses.

Depending on your interest and field of study, Auditor Evaluator Interns participate in either Performance or Financial auditing:

  • Performance Auditor Evaluator Intern: You are a good fit for this type of work if you want to improve government and like solving problems. You have a passion for public service with critical thinking skills, and are in your junior or senior year of college studying any field.
  • Financial Auditor Evaluator Intern: You are a good fit for this type of work if you are interested in financial auditing and analysis. You have an interest in becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and are in your junior or senior year of college studying accounting, finance, business, or a related field.

 

How Do I Join?

The California State Auditor is part of the merit-based California civil service selection system. To complete this process, you must do the following:

  • Submit a completed State of California job application
  • Submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) responding to the two questions below using specific examples of your education, training and experience. Your response will help us determine who to interview for the position. Create a document using a word processing application such as Microsoft Word, and limit your response to one page. We will not consider applications that do not include responses to the two questions.
  1. Please provide three reasons why you are interested in an internship with the California State Auditor’s Office.
  2. In a paragraph, tell us why you are interested in being either a Performance Auditor Evaluator Intern or a Financial Auditor Evaluator Intern. Please only select one and explain why.

 

What is the Hiring Timeline?

The general steps in the hiring process are as follows:

  • Submit your application by October 9th.
  • You will be notified at the end of October if you are moving forward in the hiring process.
  • You will participate in an interview in late October or early November and will be provided a tentative offer within two or three weeks if you are selected for the position.
  • You will join our team in mid-June 2025.

This position is eligible for participation in the office’s hybrid telework program. Work at the alternate work location must be in California and conducted in a space that is ergonomically sound, private, distraction-free, and has safe working conditions to be eligible to telework.
