Transportation Engineering Technicians

The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Geotechnical Services (GS) is looking to hire Transportation Engineering Technicians (TET) in the Office of Geotechnical Support (OGS).

Under the direction of a Senior Transportation Engineer, the TET will perform laboratory testing on soil and rock samples for project design input and construction specification compliance, using established test procedures. The incumbent will support all aspects of the testing process, including but not limited to, sample receipt, review of test requests and tracking forms, sample storage, sample preparation, sample testing, processing test results, tracking ongoing and completed testing, archiving test results, disposing of surplus samples, and salvaging sample tubes. The TET will also do other duties as required to maintain and improve the Geotechnical Laboratory and test equipment.

The work requires mathematical and electronic skills, orderly work habits, computer usage, mechanical aptitude, and normal manual dexterity. Lifting and carrying materials samples is required. Must have a basic knowledge of soils and soil properties. The ability to do routine, repetitive testing, following set procedures, while maintaining a high degree of accuracy is required. Knowledge of personal computers using Windows operating systems, and a working knowledge of basic software programs such as Word and Excel are required. The ability to independently apply sound judgment in test situations and to analyze factors capable of effecting test results is required. The ability to work with others, to deal tactfully with clients and to communicate effectively is also required.


Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineering Technician exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.
