Assistant Director of Technology and Data Services

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Assistant Director of Technology and Data Services is responsible for planning, managing, and implementing comprehensive technology initiatives/services for WISD and constituent districts in the areas of administrative, operational, and instructional technology. The Assistant Director will advise and consult with the Chief Information Officer on strategic issues pertinent to technology services; maintain close working relationship with all local technology directors, and boards for greater probability of success in meeting increased demands of technology implementation and utilization; direct and coordinate all aspects of technology services in security, compliance, training, end user support, enterprise network services, applications development, district central office support, and the Washtenaw Fiber Consortium network provided to the local districts of Washtenaw ISD; provide leadership in technology strategies and data collection/reporting expectations of the Michigan Dept. of Education.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promotes and supports organizational culture by reinforcing Board of Education goals, policies and procedures and the organization's vision, mission, and continuous improvement plan.
  • Provides supervision, operational support, and strategic leadership to departmental personnel and programs.
  • Serves as an advocate for public education and Washtenaw County Schools.
  • Develops, writes, and manages grants and contracts in collaboration with department members.
  • Leads projects, supports effective teamwork, and motivates staff to produce quality outcomes.
  • Analyzes and solves strategic and operational issues; plans and oversees the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures and technologies to improve departmental efficiency.
  • Develops and monitors the department budget in alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Leads the development and implementation of new products and services to meet organizational goals.
  • Facilitates and communicates information from group, departmental, and administrative meetings, and committees.
  • Performs appropriate human resources functions necessary for hiring, coaching, evaluating, disciplining, and supervising staff; manages contract-to-hire staff and associated contracts.
  • Manages the Technology and Data Services department in the absence of the Director.
  • Evaluates and recommends vendor-supplied hardware and software.
  • Assigns, reviews, and prioritizes help desk tickets.
  • Supports staff professional growth and assists districts in developing support processes.
  • Works with the CIO to plan and develop the annual budget for new and replacement infrastructure.
  • Plans and/or oversees the development, implementation, and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOP's) and technologies that improve the operating quality and efficiency of the department.
  • Explores emerging technologies.
  • Oversees maintenance of WISD firewalls, DMZs, and VPNs, and provides leadership for technology programs, including WANs, LANs, servers, workstations, operating systems, end user support, filters, and other county wide projects.
  • Directs strategic and operational plans, projects, and systems in collaboration with department members.
  • Manages network security, fiber WAN, and all related installations and communications with school districts.
  • Administers partnerships with local school districts and community agencies and designs professional learning activities.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of theory, research, methodology, legislation, and regulations in technology and data services.
  • Serves as a resource on technology-related issues and provides consultative services to departments and schools.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage developing people and their skills.
  • Exhibits ability to be a team leader, as well as work as part of a team, to communicate clearly, think creatively, and relate well with other team members.
  • Coordinates backup staffing and ensures regular attendance.
  • On-call availability to handle work problems at all hours is required.
  • Possesses customer service skills, independence, and initiative.
  • Demonstrates highly organized and demonstrated ability to manage multiple short and long-term projects.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises staff assigned to the infrastructure (network and servers) section of the department.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned.

 
QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Possesses a minimum of an earned bachelor's degree including computer-related course work, or five (5) years of an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possesses a minimum of five (5) years of experience supporting information technology or data systems.
  • Possesses a minimum of five (5) years of experience supporting information technology on computer networks (TCP/IP based).
  • Possesses a minimum of five (5) years of experience with internetworking devices (i.e. routers, switches, firewalls), networking topologies and protocols.
  • Possesses experience with complex networks (i.e. routers, switches, firewalls), networking topologies and protocols.
  • Possesses experience with Ethernet GB protocols to 100GB, fiber modules, distance relation and other WAN protocols, Cisco IOS and router-table configuration.
  • Possesses knowledge of routing protocols: BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, RIP.
  • Possesses a minimum of five (5) years of experience managing staff and resources.

  • Understands current and emerging technology issues impacting ISDs and local districts related to instruction and related technological areas.

 
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Demonstrates ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. The ability to travel to other buildings is required. TERMS:
Contract, salary, and other employment conditions to be established by the Board of Education as reflected in the Non-Affiliated Staff Manual. Starting salary ranging (dependent upon experience) from $110,025 - $135,223.
