Innovation Institute Commercialization Intern

*Paid Internship Opportunity *

(10 hours per week at $20 per hour)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Tulane University Innovation Institute (TUII) is designed to help bridge the gap between university research and the marketplace/public sphere, catalyzing the real-world impact of Tulane’s world-class, audacious research. Innovation Interns will be responsible for interfacing with the research apparatus at Tulane, including faculty, staff, and trainees, to identify and help de-risk candidate projects for the gap fund within the TUII. This will involve meeting with university scientists, attending internal and external research-focused events, performing additional technology-specific and innovation/entrepreneurship ecosystem research.

 

Innovation Fellows are supervised by the Director of Commercialization Intelligence and Assessment to support the entire institute.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (Note: Only the following two criteria—oneeducation and one experience—will be used for screening qualified applicants.)

  1. Tulane Degree In Progress
  2. Demonstrated interest in commercialization, innovation, and/or entrepreneurship

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES TYPICALLY NEEDED TO

PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY:

  1. An entry-level knowledge of translational research in biomedicine, chemistry, physical sciences and engineering, and/or biotechnology and of product development.
  2. An entry-level understanding of industry, VC and non-traditional funding sources as well as academia collaboration practices.
  3. Ability to interact effectively in academic and corporate cultures and to bridge those cultures.
  4. Ability to work with diverse constituencies.
  5. Excellent organizational skills.
  6. Strategic thinking: ability to link research capabilities with market needs and trends to identify opportunities for innovations and collaborations.
  7. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated potential for “sales abilities”.
  8. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  9. Ability to multitask, follow-direction as needed but work independently, and ensure timely completion of work on complex assignments.

  2. Undergraduate degree in business or a science
