Transportation Co-Op - Statewide

Qualifications:

  • Must be working on a BS in Engineering, Administrative Program, Information Technology, Environmental Program, or a two-to-four-year BS in Engineering. 
  • Must complete 30 credit hours (or equivalent) when finishing freshman year
  • Must be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours) the semester preceding and succeeding the period for which you are applying. 
  • Must have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA
  • Must have a valid driver's license

 

Description:

The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) Co-Op Program is designed to provide on-the-job training and experience for college students.  This program will immerse the students in various work assignments, projects, and activities of varying complexity that are structured to provide the student the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform at a professional level within the WVDOT. 

Work assignments provide experience in various aspects such as:

  • Engineering -- Design, Bridge, Maintenance, Construction, Traffic, Materials, etc.
    • Typical engineering assignments include inspecting work in progress at construction sites, calculating quantities of materials, reviewing and analyzing data and participating in field reviews. College graduates with WVDOH co-op experience find they are well prepared for responsible entry-level engineering positions.
    • Engineering and Specialty Systems involving support, design, training, implementation and maintenance of Engineering and related applications.
  • Administrative -- Finance, Auditing, Budget, Accounting, Human Resources, etc.
    •  Typical accounting assignments may include complex posting, encumbering of funds, examining records, making journal entries, and preparing audit narrative reports.
  • Information Technology -- PC Programming, Geographic Information Systems, Engineering and Specialty Systems, etc.
    • Typical IT assignments may include PC Programming requiring knowledge of Microsoft Visual Basic.Net and C#, Java Script, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Environmental Resources -- Construction Inspection, Storm Water, FEMA, Asbestos, Underground Storage Tanks, Building Inspection, etc.
    • Typical Environmental Program assignments may include Construction Inspection, Storm Water, Asbestos, Building Inspection, FEMA,GIS, and Underground Storage Tanks.
