The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation, Boards and Commissions is hiring an Accountant I to join their Pierre, SD team.

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated individual for the Accountant I position. The Accountant I will:

  • Work with the multiple software systems in reconciling all billing accounts and then working with getting accounts ready to go to collections.
  • Send out regular monthly statements.
  • Assistance with yearly fiscal evaluation.
  • Compare current fiscal reports and work with program director on any patterns they see that might help.
  • Assistance developing sustainable fee schedules.
  • Evaluate the current day-to-day office practices for receipting and depositing cash and checks to determine if there is a more efficient method to complete them.
  • Compile reports to match to our daily deposits.

This is a Full-Time 40 Hours Weekly position with the Department of Labor and Regulation, Boards and Commissions. This position will work in a typical office environment. Licenses and Certifications:

Candidates do NOT need to be a licensed CPA for this position.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

A bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting, Business Administration, or other related financial field, and 2-4 years of progressive experience in Accounting is preferred. Preferably at least 2 years of experience with South Dakota accounting procedures.

Knowledge of:

  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
  • financial reporting and preparing journal entries;
  • an understanding of the difference between cash basis vc. accrual basis accounting;
  • accounts payable process knowledge;
  • work processes pertaining to finance and accounting; and
  • basic statistical measures.

Skill to:

  • manipulate tables and pivot tables in Microsoft Excel;
  • look at data and financial information and detect errors and anomalies;
  • reconcile information from multiple sources and make corrections as needed; and
  • develop working relationships with all staff members with the boards and commissions.

Ability to:

  • provide professional customer service, internally and externally;
  • interpret and comprehend program guidelines and procedures and communicate both effectively;
  • gather, interpret, report, and use information concerning assigned activities;
  • train and provide guidance to staff and service users;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and other partners;
  • compile complex financial records and prepare financial reports;
  • work independently and exercise judgment; and
  • manage and prioritize work.
