Youth Stewardship Program Intern (PO-00800307)
Position Summary
The Youth Stewardship Program (YSP) is a program of the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department engages youth and school groups, grades K-12, in environmental education and service-learning field trips in parks citywide. The program mission is to foster an understanding of their important role in building healthy social and natural communities.
YSP exposes urban students to an outdoor learning environment that proves to be engaging and challenging. Each trip is 2.5 hours long and includes an environmental education and restoration component. YSP Interns will teach science, environmental education, local natural and cultural history, social responsibility, a personal connection to their communities, and fundamental life skills to participating students throughout the school year.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Coordinate, schedule, and co-lead in-class presentations and; thematic field trips to San Francisco’s city parks and natural areas for; grades 2nd -12th grade.;
• Utilize environmental education curriculum and resources to create; meaningful lesson plans;
• Have an ongoing dialogue with teachers and educators to schedule; field trips and modify the established YSP curriculum to meet teachers’; needs when necessary.;
• Maintain thorough data collection and records including creating and; conducting surveys, capturing media documentation, creating reports; etc., to meet grant deliverables.;
• Support Occasional Greenager and large volunteer workdays on Saturdays (as needed)
Required Qualifications
• Experience working with youth is a must
• Willing to work occasional off hours and outdoors in inclement; weather
• California State Drivers’ License with a good driving record
• Willingness to submit a copy of driving record if hired
• Commit to 40 hours per week ; 12-month commitment
• Must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination by the start of the; position
• Experience leading/facilitating youth through structured activities
• Able to engage and comfortable managing groups of youth and/or; adults for 2+ hours
• Works well in a team setting and similarly, is self-motivated and can; work independently
• Passion for the environment and working outdoors
• A high commitment to learning about San Francisco Parks and Open Spaces
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Computer literate; MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, Internet
Preferred Qualifications
• Demonstrate emotional intelligence and self-awareness, inspires confidence and trust, and welcomes feedback.
• Highly collaborative team player able to motivate and work with staff and partners and work cross-functionally between SFRPD departments
• Able to work well under pressure and adapt easily to changing situations and priorities, while exercising good judgment and staying focused on overarching goals.
• Enjoys working with diverse intergenerational crowds, and has a strong interest in working with youth;
• B.A. or B.S. in a related subject (preferred not required);
• Multi-lingual, ideally in Spanish and/or Cantonese;
• Interest and experience in Urban Agriculture and Urban Park;
• Comfortable driving large trucks or willing to learn;
• Ideally Bay Area resident;
• Passion for the environment and working outdoors and genuine interest in connecting youth to nature;
• Previous related experience or background in biology, environmental studies, or other related subjects or strong interest and willing to learn independently and through experience ;

Compensation
Living Allowance - $780.00/week
Housing Allowance - $900.00/month
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
