2025 Manufacturing Engineering Intern - Grand Rapids, MI

We are seeking a motivated 2025 Manufacturing Engineering Intern - Grand Rapids, MI to assist in the various phases of our product launch process. This role offers a unique opportunity to consult on system processes, influence continuous improvement of the product development system. 

What You Will Be Doing: 

  • Improvement activities on the PD&L process from product exploration phase through product launch.  
  • Less hands on and more focus on the high-level process for improvement opportunities.  
  • System Process Improvement: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze and optimize system processes, ensuring efficiency and quality. 
  • Design for Manufacturability: Work closely with product design teams to offer feedback and suggestions that enhance manufacturability and streamline production. 
  • Process Documentation: Assist in creating and maintaining detailed process documentation, including work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and design specifications. 
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in projects focused on continuous improvement, contributing to Steelcase’s commitment to innovation and excellence.

Required Skills and Competencies 

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for innovation. 
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes, product development. 
  • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and tools is a plus.  
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate across different disciplines. 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Previous internship or co-op experience in manufacturing, engineering, or packaging is a plus but not required. 
  • Understanding of LEAN principles 
  • Previous SAP knowledge preferred 
  • Advanced Excel skills 
  • Preferred Education: Sophomore or Junior pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering.  

Preferred Skills and Competencies 

  • Basic proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office 
  • Reliable transportation, many of our sites do not have public transportation available 
  • Process mapping for enterprise solutions
