Campus Organizing Fellow

In 2024, the Michigan ONE Campaign's focus is on putting Michigan issues first, fighting for families, seniors, students, and veterans, and working to elect Democrats across the state, while holding Republicans accountable across the board. From the grassroots to the Capitol steps, the only way we can move our state forward is if we work together to build a stronger, better Democratic movement.

Michigan campuses provide a path for Vice President Harris to win the state and carry its 15 electoral votes. Historically, the campuses have elected Governor Gretchen Whitmer to her first and second term in 2018 and 2022 respectively, and were instrumental in the victory of President Biden in the 2020 election. By mobilizing this crucial demographic, we can guarantee a victory in the state of Michigan.

The key to the mobilization of the youth demographic is direct relational organizing. The Campus Organizing team approach to this has involved significant involvement on campus with welcome week events. Some events consisted of high traffic canvassing and others were more community based. Every event involved talking directly to potential voters and registering them to vote (VRs) and getting them committed to vote (CTVs) for Democrats. Going forward, the Campus Organizing team will focus on meetings and other activities that will engage and bring in students.

Fellowship Outcomes

In this fellowship, we want all of our team members to develop themselves and the mission. We expect fellows to come out of this experience enriched with:

  • Management experience leading volunteers to achieve specific goals and objectives set by ONECampaign staff,
  • Campaign experience by directly talking to voters, registering voters, and ensuring turnout for early in-person voting and election day in-person voting,
  • Events experience by designing and executing campaign activities with high profile surrogates and other community events on campus,
  • Added connections with Michigan Democratic elected officials, campaign staff, and community members.

Fellows Responsibilities

Fellows will be assigned to their school or the one nearest to them. They will directly answer to the Campus Organizer at their school and fulfill any immediate objectives that are needed of them.

  • Fellows first priority will be to register other students on their campus.
    • Voter registration (VRs) is the key to introducing new voters that vote predominantly Democratic.
    • There are multiple methods to register voters, including through fellows classes, high traffic canvassing on places like campus quads and walkways, events with surrogates and activities, and tabling.
    • These events should ideally be built using teams of volunteers through mobilize or campus partners.
    • Volunteers enable fellows and staff to double our expectations from an event, with more people covering different angles and double the energy.
  • After voter registration, one of our largest metrics that we as a team deliver on is commit to votes (CTVs).
    • These have been scientifically identified as a way to increase voter turnout for our candidate.
    • We receive the information of a voter and use these different methods to ensure turnout during GOTV.
  • Fellows can be expected to help build for events on campus or targeting youth.
    • What this can entail is providing the initial idea for an event, calling through lists of potential people to attend events, working out logistics and providing support on the day of execution, among other things.
  • Fellows can also be expected to help provide support to our campus partners that support our goals and initiatives.
  • Fellows will also have generalized responsibilities that may be assigned throughout the cycle.

Fellows will prioritize their continued academic success while maintaining their fellowship’s responsibilities. If an event or activity conflicts with class schedule, the fellow should notify their supervisor to see about rescheduling or canceling.

Fellows will be paid through a biweekly check half of their monthly stipend. Fellows opt in to 10, 20, or 30 hours when they are onboarded initially. Each 10 hour increment is $1,000, with the scale going from $1,000 to $2,000 and capping at $3,000 a month.
