The Herff Farm at The Cibolo Center for Conservation is a cornerstone of community engagement and environmental stewardship,. The Herff Farm offers a rich array of public events, community gardens, and a bustling Farmers Market, making it a focal point for local culture and sustainable living. At the Herff Farm is the Teaching Garden, a one-acre living classroom where individuals can immerse themselves in the art and science of organic gardening. Here, the public can learn and practice sustainable gardening techniques that are specifically tailored to the unique climate and soil conditions of southwest Texas.

 

Reports To: Farm Manager

Position Overview:

The Cibolo Center for Conservation is seeking a motivated, self-starting, and respectful gardener to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess strong problem-solving skills and be capable of performing strenuous physical labor in an outdoor environment. This role is critical in supporting our farm operations, and it requires someone who is dependable, adaptable, and eager to contribute to our mission.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform various tasks outdoors, including lifting, bending, twisting, and carrying materials.
  • Follow instructions from the Farm Manager to complete daily and weekly work priorities.
  • Operate vehicles and farm equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Participate in physical labor tasks, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, and maintenance, in all weather conditions.
  • Ensure all work is conducted in compliance with safety standards and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to ensure smooth operations.
  • Implement daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal schedules for all Farm & Garden care and maintenance. 
  • Work on Saturdays as needed to meet the needs of the farm.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited high school or equivalent (GED).
  • Proven relevant work experience in a similar role.
  • Ability to follow directions and work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated dependability and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, bend, stoop, and work on ladders.
  • Valid State of Texas driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Experience operating vehicles and various farm equipment.
  • Basic understanding of gardening practices

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Garden enthusiast who loves working outdoors
  • Experience working with diverse age groups in an educational or farm setting.
  • Open-mindedness and willingness to learn different farming and gardening techniques.
