2025 Data Science Internship, Operations Research

Data Scientists at Eastman work to provide actionable insights using advanced analytics to help the company make better and faster decisions. Data Scientists work in a centralized department organized into four groups: Applied Statistics, AI/Machine Learning, Operations Research, and Generative AI. As an intern in the Operations Research team, you will use mathematical optimization and simulation techniques to solve business problems across multiple areas of the company. Responsibilities

  • Leverage your programming skills to develop solutions that generate valuable and actionable insights to empower business decisions.
  • Build and execute simulation and/or optimization models using data from diverse sources.
  • Create reports that efficiently convey model results to key stakeholders.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with clients and other employees in a diverse set of roles from individual contributors to senior management.

 

Qualifications

  • Solid foundation in one or more of the following areas: mathematical programming (linear or mixed integer programming) or simulation (discrete-event or Monte Carlo) techniques.
  • Proficiency in a modern programming language, preferably Python.
  • Experience with optimization tools (e.g., GUROBI, COIN-OR, CPLEX) and/or simulation tools (e.g., SIMIO, ARENA, @RISK) is preferred.
  • Skills in SQL for data acquisition and Python or Excel for data cleaning/processing are a plus.
  • Capable of interpreting results from models and building reports using tools such as Power BI or Excel to share clear and actionable results with end users. Ability to manage complex projects and methodically work towards rigorous solutions.
  • Critically evaluate customer requirements and deploy solutions to meet specific needs.

 

Required Education: Pursuing or enrolled in an M.S. or Ph.D. in the United States in a quantitative field such as Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Business Analytics, Computer Science, Data Science, or any other relevant field including engineering.

 

Location: Kingsport, TN (in-person/hybrid)
