Meijer offers an 11-week internship program that challenges interns to deliver innovative solutions to real projects that impact the business. Throughout the course of the internship experience, we deliver diverse personal and professional development opportunities that further develop skillsets that can be implemented both during and after the program. The internship program will allow for interaction with other interns and Meijer senior leaders.

What you will be doing as a Merchandising Intern:

 

Merchandising Interns will work with one of our Core teams learning both the strategic and tactical aspects of merchandising and product flow. Interns will participate in various training courses at the beginning of the internship program for technical development, including Excel, MicroStrategy, Dunnhumby, and Nielsen.

 

The intern may also get exposure to other activities of the function, including:

  • Product flow concepts and the product life cycle process
  • Collaboration with supply chain and logistics
  • Consumer insights, positioning metrics, and industry trends (Dunnhumby, Nielsen etc.)
  • Seasonal category business plans
  • Validation of new item accuracy, item master set-up, and product outdates
  • Conceptual assortment planning, initial line plans, vendor lines and selection
  • Ad development, proofing and resolving discrepancies
  • Collaboration with Digital Marketing & Space Planning teams

 

Previous Merchandising Intern projects have included:

 

  • Creation of a gender-neutral clothing line that launched in Meijer stores in 2022
  • Making recommendations on sourcing, pricing, promotional, and marketing strategies to increase own brand penetration into Hardlines.
  • Cultivating a new meal solution and making recommendations on display and pricing
  • Focus on instore experience to help analyze categories and displays to identify which categories should be on display, the ideal duration of displays, and impact to On Shelf Availability.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Progress toward a Bachelor's degree in merchandising, marketing, supply chain, retail, logistics or a related field.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to gather and interpret data from various reporting
  • Knowledge of the retail industry, including category management and customer behaviors
  • Previous retail experience preferred
  • Relationship Skills - can create positive working relationships with customers, team members, leadership, vendors, and office support staff
  • Drive for results - has focus on the bottom line
  • Customer focus - dedicated to meeting expectations of internal and external customers
  • Communication Skills - conveys the right information in writing and verbally   
  • Microsoft application experience, with the ability to learn additional systems and tools
