Monthly Salary: $4,875 per month 
 

As a paid Summer Intern in the Network Control Systems Engineering department, students are immersed in the technology and engineering fields centered around the vital network control systems that ensure our railway network's safety and efficiency. The program offers interns the chance to tackle real-world challenges alongside experienced engineers. Through this hands-on experience, interns enhance their technical and problem-solving skills and gain invaluable insights into the operations of one of North America's leading railroad companies. Ultimately, our Summer Internship Program aims to identify students for our Management Trainee Program, a direct path to joining one of North America's leading railroad companies’ post-graduation.

This is a full-time position primarily in an office environment, with some field activities. 

Travel is minimal, with up to 25% travel required for the role; candidates must have reliable transportation to and from work, and Relocation is required for individuals located more than 50 miles from the workplace.

Training will start with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, offering a company overview and networking with leaders, followed by support on ongoing projects and practical field training at an assigned location.

Key Responsibilities:

Design, Develop, Deploy, and Maintain the critical Train Control Systems that enable BNSF to move trains safely and efficiently across the network.

Support the systems responsible for monitoring and assessing system health, measuring KPIs, collecting and analyzing large amounts of data utilizing data science principles, and Laser mapping the network to ensure the digital railroad infrastructure is in sync with the physical one.

Gain knowledge of critical safety system design, data modeling, data science principals’, GIS Systems, LiDAR mobile mapping, .NET, C/C++, Python software development, web development custom designed frameworks, project management, and locomotive systems.

Be exposed to the methodologies, principles, and design considerations associated with critical systems that demand a highly available and fault-tolerant infrastructure. 

Opportunities within the program offer exposure to a diverse set of areas including Business Intelligence/Analytics, Database Administration, Information Security, Network Management, SAP Development, Sensory Technology, System Architecture, Project Management, Telecommunications/Positive Train Control, and GIS.

Daily work is conducted in an indoor office environment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States and will be at least eighteen (18) years old upon hire.
  • Does not require sponsorship to obtain, maintain, or extend authorization to work in the United States. (For example, H1-B Visa or STEM OPT)
  • Capable of working in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and can safely perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions or in a shop, terminal, or field environment. Role includes climbing ladders and navigating uneven surfaces, with the ability to travel up to 25% of the time based on business needs.
  • Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Business, OR a similar degree program from an accredited university.
  • Have and will maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA.
  • Have LESS THAN three (3) years of professional work experience, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held while pursuing my undergraduate and/or graduate degree.
  • Have access to reliable transportation for the duration of the internship to and from my assigned BNSF location.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior internship experience or less than 3 years of work experience in Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Have or have held a leadership position in a campus, community, or extracurricular organization.
