Intern - Substation Engineering

DEPARTMENT: T&S Engineering – Wichita Service Center  
LOCATION: Wichita, KS 
PAY RANGE: $21.00 - $26.00

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, Between 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (15 hours min per week)

Intern Description:
Using the fundamentals of engineering, and under the supervision of Substation Engineering, you can expect to work on a variety of assignments related to substation design.  You will also have the opportunity to visit the substation construction sites and see first-hand the results of design work and interact with the field construction personnel.

Job tasks include but are not limited to:
• Perform design relating to the Company’s electric substation equipment (Structures, foundations, grounding systems, equipment layouts, fences, ect.) using engineering principles or software to ensure reliability and safety.  
• Specify substation equipment using substation ratings (e.g., bus, ground mat, conduit, switches, power circuit breakers, transformers, capacitor banks, reactor banks) to ensure reliability and safety.
• Develop system one-line of substations utilizing standards and input from other departments.
• Specify substation material.    
• Support both operations and construction personnel as needed in troubleshooting, failure analysis, mis-operations, testing assistance, commissioning assistance and other technical duties by analyzing data and providing findings in order to resolve problems as they arise (e.g., construction issues, erosion maintenance, steel modifications, drawing errors, property rights). 
• Select and design sites for new substations by taking input from several Company departments and outside agencies, and working with internal/external customers to meet system needs. 
• Create substation design standards.

Education and Experience Requirements:
Candidate must be enrolled in a university pursuing a degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. Preference given to those with 2 or less years to graduate with a BS or are currently working on their graduate degree.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
• Proficiency Microsoft Word and Excel
• Familiarity in drafting tools such as AutoCAD is a plus.  
• Must be dependable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented.
• Must possess the ability to work and communicate effectively with other company personnel. 
• Must have a valid drivers license.

Working Conditions:
Normal office working conditions, but will require an occasional site visit for data gathering or construction review.
