Intern - Transmission Line Engineering

LOCATION: Kansas City, MO
PAY RANGE: $21.00 - $26.00

Scheduled Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Other hours as required)

Intern Description:
With minimal supervision, this position is responsible for all aspects of transmission line design. Regular duties include line routing, structure design and selection, foundation design, conductor evaluation, budget estimates, structure spotting/survey, preparation of labor and material specifications, construction drawings with bills of material and construction contract documents.  Coordinates projects between other departments and work locations. Conducts failure investigations, reviews projects that impact existing or planned transmission facilities and develops and implements new technologies. Direct contact with customers at their locations and work schedules may be required periodically.  

Job tasks include but not limited to:
• Become familiar with all aspects of surveying as related to transmission line design. To include LiDAR, land based models, easements, potholing and boring logs.
• Gain experience in understanding the concepts behind foundation design and the various foundation systems used to support transmission line structures.
• Obtain hands-on experience and build skills in PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE, the industry-standard software for transmission line engineering.
• Apply the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) to pole relocations, line compliance reviews, and customer driven needs.
• Support the design team on reviewing transmission lines for NESC clearance requirements.

Education and Experience Requirements:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university with an ABET accredited engineering program in one of the following or a related technical field: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
• Requires proficient knowledge of basic engineering principles and advanced mathematics.  
• Prefer a working knowledge of power systems, a mechanical aptitude and surveying experience.  
• Must be proficient in the use of spreadsheets, word processing and database software. 
• Successful candidate must be able to evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria, using good judgment in making adaptations and modifications. 
• Must have demonstrated good organizational skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with others.  
• Must have excellent teamwork and people skills.  
• Must have initiative and be a self-starter.

Conditions will vary from office, substation, and transmission line field environments.
