Veterinary Externship
Description: Allow DVM students to gain valuable real-world experience by shadowing a practicing DVM, participating in rounds, helping with pets for procedures (at the doctor's discretion), observing doctor-client interaction, and observing surgery.
Requirements:
· Third-fourth year accredited veterinary school students
· Interest in living in the greater NYC area
· Desire to practice in general medicine and surgery
Externship Experience:
New York Veterinary Practice (NYVP) is a general practice clinic serving NYC pet owners, operating on-site at four of Biscuits & Bath’s full-service dog care facilities (all located in Manhattan). You will shadow eight hours a day, three to five days a week with one of our experienced DVMs. Your development will involve observation in the following areas:
· Medical Skills
o Physical Exam
· How to perform a proper examination
o How to weigh a dog
o Check vitals
o Checking the full system
· How to administer vaccinations
· How to administer medication
· How to take blood
· How to identify warning signs (and make associated recommendations)
· Updating notes and records on the pet’s profile
o Observe surgery
· Review the prerequisites to surgery (bloodwork, initial exam for health status)
· Day-prior checklist
· Day-off intake
· Putting a pet under anesthesia
· What to do if things don’t go as planned
· Check-out and post-op directions/care
· Client Orientation
o Greet client and pet at check-in
· Re-confirm needs and proper history taking techniques
· Identify any questions
· Identify any recommendations (preventatives, unknown vaccinations)
· Identify any behavior concerns (biting, muzzle)
o Send visit summary and recommendations
· Suggest other services based on need (Exercise/Weight, Hygiene, Behavior)
· Solicit questions/feedback
· Recommend future wellness examination with a date
· Book next appointment when applicable
· Or put in Veterinary Consult to follow up with the client
o Follow up with the client’s day of
· Well pet: summary email
· Surgery pet: post-op call
· Sick pet: call, in no answer email
o Follow up with clients from prior examinations
· Well pet: check if veterinary consult needed, lab results shared, future appointment needed
· Surgery pet: check on recovery/complications
· Sick pet: frequency determined by a medical condition
· Time Management
o Review of the day's schedule
· Confirm appointment notes and wellness needs
· Ensure schedule is manageable
o Check email for any urgent needs (lab results, critical client cases, questions)
o End of Day - review schedule for the next five business days
· Confirm appointment notes
· Ensure schedule is full and manageable
· Identify extra opportunities
