2025 Summer Intern - Manufacturing Engineering

Work Arrangement:    

Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to a GM or supplier facility, as designated by the business, on a full-time basis.

 

What You’ll Do:   

As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern for General Assembly / Automation & Cybersecurity / Electrical & Software Defined Vehicle, you will be exposed to various positions and assignments in plant and corporate staff locations throughout the United States sought to cultivate development and to educate. Positions in the three organizations are hands-on and engaging. You will learn problem solving on the fly, to work collaboratively with many members of the team, and be able to flex your creative muscles. Most assignments will be located in Warren, MI, strategic partners around Southeast Michigan, or manufacturing sites in Michigan. Examples of Manufacturing Engineering assignments available include: 

Analyze product, process, and technology to craft best methods to assemble vehicles, and protect the manufacturing process

Recommend and validate improvement for existing processes

Support evaluation of innovative technologies to address current manufacturing challenges

Develop tools to improve program/project management

Support development and implementation of cybersecurity tools for manufacturing

Assist in the design, build, and validation of tools and equipment

Programming of manufacturing technology

Assist maintenance personnel in operation and maintenance of specialized equipment

Troubleshoots special maintenance and equipment problems

Coordinate machinery and equipment upgrade projects

 

About the Roles & Responsibilities for Global Manufacturing Engineering:

Develop processes, equipment, and tools for 50 Assembly, 30+ Stamping, and 30 Propulsion Plants, and approximately 30 launches each year globally

Collaborate with other centers to reduce energy and waste globally

Develop and evaluate manufacturing innovations to support the factory of the future

Responsible for all value-added systems for Vehicle Assembly including lean material strategies (General Assembly)

Develop & Validate new Automation, Controls, Conveyors, and Cybersecurity for all manufacturing sites to enable quality and create a safe & secure factory (Automation & Cybersecurity)

Develop, Validate, & Launch new Test Software & Equipment for production to ensure electrical first-time quality for vehicle assembly and new electric propulsion assemblies (Electrical & Software Defined Vehicle)

Upskill employees with technical skills required to perform electrical-based jobs in manufacturing sites (Electrical & Software Defined Vehicles)

Travel varies based on assignment and may be required to strategic partners and plants.

 

 

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications: 

Pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology in one of the following areas: Automation, Automotive, Computer/Computer Science/Computer Animation, Construction Management, Industrial, Information Technology, Kinesiology, Machine Learning, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Robotics, Software, or equivalent

Must be graduating Spring 2027 or later

Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week during the summer months

Must be willing to work any shift, potentially including weekends

Must be willing to work in a plant environment

Prior experience in field of study

Conceptual understanding and/or experience in any of the following:

Controls – software, hardware development or execution

Developing tools, equipment, or processes such as layouts

Exposure to manufacturing processes: components to product assembly

Simulation/Game design or development

Artificial intelligence, machine learning, machine vision equipment or systems

Automation or automated equipment such as conveyance

Information Technology

Construction or installation planning, process, or execution

Human factors, ergonomics

Consistently demonstrates innovative thinking that is customer-centric

Able to work independently and with a team

Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization and external partners

Emerging partnership and collaboration skills and ability to learn from and share knowledge with co-workers in a fast-paced environment

High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, takes initiative/self-directed

Knowledge of statistical methods as applied to experimental design and process development

 

Start dates for this internship role are May & June of 2025.  

 

Compensation: 

The salary range for this role is $3,800 - $5,200 monthly, dependent upon class status and degree. 

GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2025 Student Program.
