Aquarium Medical Center Intern
Time commitment:
12-16 Weeks. At Least Two Full Days per week (8 AM - 5 PM)
Summary:
The New England Aquarium is currently seeking an Aquarium Medical Center Intern to assist with the daily operations of the Animal Health Department. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, self-starter looking to gain knowledge in the field of aquarium veterinary medicine and general animal health. The candidate will report to the Certified Veterinary Technician and Biologists in the Animal Health Department.
Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Interns will assist with general hospital upkeep including but not limited to keeping the hospital clean, organizing, restocking supplies, checking inventory lists, setting up for procedures, cleaning after procedures, mopping, and dusting
Observe and occasionally assist AMC staff with medical treatments and exams
Observe and eventually perform necropsies under direct supervision
Will be given the opportunity to learn about preventative medicine, medical treatments, quarantine, pathology, and laboratory diagnostics in relation to aquatic animals
Interns will gain exposure to a wide variety of the aquarium collection including fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and occasionally marine mammals
If there are any animals in the AMC hospital tank, interns may assist with cleaning, food prep, and LSS support in conjunction with Giant Ocean Tank staff
Interns are expected to produce a 15 minute power point presentation and complete assigned projects
Attend professional development sessions with the Volunteer Programs and Internships Office
Skills/Qualifications:
Must have previous experience with animal care and handling
A background in college-level basic sciences, especially Biology and Zoology, is desired
The position requires physical tasks. Applicants must be able to life and carry 50 lbs
Must be able work independently
