Front Office Assistant - Mathematical Sciences

About:

Our Mathematics department is home to many branches of the mathematical sciences: pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics—even mathematics education. Each discipline is represented by passionate practitioners and avid researchers—all of whom collaborate to build a strong department.

 

Office Assistant  Requirements:

  • This is a part-time position
  • Must be available to work during mornings/afternoons (midday) at least four days a week
    • Midday Hours: 10am – 2pm OR 11pm – 3pm
  • Must be a Graduate Student who is eligible for Work-Study
    • International students ARE NOT eligible for this position
    • Cannot be a Graduate Student in the Department of Mathematical Sciences

 

Office Assistant Responsibilities:

 

This position will assist with a variety of responsibilities in the Math Department.   Some of these responsibilities include:

·        Answer telephones, transfer calls to appropriate individuals and take messages when necessary

·        Greet and assist department personnel, students, and other visitors

·        Communicate with students and other individuals to answer questions and explain information

·        Operate office equipment, such as photocopiers, scanners and facsimile machine

·        Make copies of materials and information as requested

·        Sort and distribute incoming mail

·        Stock supply shelves as orders are received

·        Assist with updates to the Math Department website

·        Assist with Departmental Events

  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs.

 

Learning Outcomes:

Problem Solving: Student employees in this position will learn how to stay organized and manage their time effectively by balancing various administrative tasks in an office setting.

Communication: Additionally, students will learn how to be better communicators through active listening and interacting with visitors to the department.
