Engineering Field Inspector

Engineering Field Inspector (Community Development)

STARTING PAY RATE:  $31.02 - $34.56 per hour based on a 40-hour workweek.  Salary dependent on qualifications.  The salary range for this position is $31.02 - $45.20.  This position is represented by a union; you may refer to the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement available on our website.

JOB SUMMARY:

This position performs inspection of exterior improvement projects for conformity to issued land development permits; quality of work; and conformity with the subdivision and land development ordinance.  To succeed in this role, applicants will need to effectively and clearly communicate to a full range of people, inside and outside the organization, be capable of managing and prioritizing multiple projects and tasks with thoroughness and accuracy.  We are looking to add a team member who has the functional skills to do the job at a high level and can read and understand engineering plans. 

 

JOB DUTIES: 
1.    Inspects work involving such construction as private roads, sidewalks, storm and sanitary sewers, water mains, site grading, curb and gutter, parking lots, retention ponds, drainage ditches, and drainage improvements.
2.    Inspects quality of materials, quality of work, layout of work, and conformance with the subdivision and land development ordinance; coordinates inspections with other inspectors, primarily involving other inspectors within the department and Engineering and Public Works.
3.    Performs preliminary as well as final inspections and enters results into the department database.
4.    Approves or disapproves construction based on conformity with appropriate village codes and ordinances.
5.    Responds to and offers technical assistance to residents and property owners regarding stormwater drainage issues.
6.    Responsible for serving proper notice and seeking proper resolution when infractions of adopted codes and ordinances are observed.  Researches and submits related code sections to substantiate violations.  Appears at adjudication hearings to testify as necessary and as required as part of a violation.
7.    Coordinates and aids MWRD for the final inspection of sanitary sewers and/or storm sewer and detention systems.
8.    Researches permits related to the annual detention inspection program, coordinates inspections, and completes the inspections and enforcement for the annual inspections.
9.    Performs special projects and surveys related to drainage issues.
10.    Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
1.    Associate’s degree in engineering technology or a related field.
2.    A minimum of two years of experience in engineering construction, comprehensive knowledge of approved methods, materials, practices, and safeguards of land development, and interpreting construction prints and drawings.
3.    Certification as a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) is preferred.
4.    Possession of a valid driver’s license.
5.    Proficiency with current computer technology, job-specific software, and customer service systems.
