(#JR-202419839) 2025 Summer Intern – Mechanical Hardware Engineering

Work Arrangement:

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is required to report to Southeast Michigan (Warren, Milford, Pontiac, or Grand Rapids) three times per week, at minimum. Depending on rotational opportunities, an employee may be required to work on-site full-time.

 

The Team:

The Global Product Development (GPD) Group is looking for innovative Hardware Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Interns to help us build state-of-the-art products.

The GPD Engineering Internship Program is a 10–12-week summer internship program. Students are matched with assignments based on preference & skillset. Depending on assignment, GPD Interns will have the opportunity to work at our locations in Milford, Pontiac, Warren, or Grand Rapids. 

Hardware Engineers (Mechanical): Physical and electronic components and systems for our existing and future vehicles.

 

What You’ll Do:

Lead and direct the design, integration, analysis, and testing of components

Demonstrate product safety, integrity, and quality through product development

Provide an innovative thinking approach to working with components, subsystems, systems, software, and hardware vehicle integration

Translate breakthrough technologies into vehicles and experiences

Efficient use of software programs such as NX, CAD, CAE, Calibration & Simulation

Required Qualifications:

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree in one of the following areas:
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechatronics/Mechatronics Engineering
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Materials Engineering/Materials Science Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Aerodynamics Engineering
  • Aeronautical Engineering
  • Controls Engineering
  • Controls Systems Engineering
  • Systems Engineering
  • Must be graduating between December 2025 and June 2028
  • Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week
  • Flexibility to be placed in either: Warren, Pontiac, Milford, or Grand Rapids, Michigan

 

What will give you a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • One former engineering or engineering related internship experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of Engineering Principles
  • Understanding of telecommunication technology
  • Hands on automotive experience and understanding of vehicle components
  • Vehicular technology (road safety, camera, lidar technology, etc.)
  • Active participation in automotive related design competitions (SAE (Autodrive, Formula, Baja,), ECOCar, Solar Racing, Clean Snowmobile Challenge, FIRST Robotics mentorship, etc.)
  • Proven history of balancing multiple projects and organizational leadership skills

Start Dates:

Start dates for this internship role are May & June of 2025. 

 

Compensation: ​

The salary range for this role is $4000-$6100 a month, dependent upon class status and degree. ​​

GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2025 Student Program.​​
