The Maine Academy of Natural Sciences is a 9-12 public charter school located in central Maine. We aim to inspire and engage students through handsĀ on, project based, student-centered instruction immersed in the natural sciences of Maine with a focus on agriculture, forestry, and the environment. MeANS challenges all students to connect with their education in order to grow as individuals, interact with their communities, and lead fulfilling lives.
At MeANS we live our values of Respect, Responsibility, & Community every day. Learning takes place in our classrooms, on our one-acre farm, and on regular field trips to local ecological sites across the state of Maine during our seasonal intensives. Each quarter, students participate in a two-week intensive in which they explore a particular aspect of the natural sciences. After venturing out on field trips, conducting independent research, and partnering with local experts, students craft original projects and showcase their learning for families and community members during our seasonal festivals!
Public Health AmeriCorps program places members with community organizations in Maine to address CDC determined public health needs for the most underserved populations. Through our partnership with MeANS, we are seeking an energetic outdoor oriented person to support natural science education. Under the supervision of our Agricultural Specialist, the member will be directly engaged in supporting educational programming in our outdoor spaces.
Whether it be the greenhouses, one-acre farm, Maple Sugar house or forestry plot, the member will be assisting teachers and students with projects. Additionally, the member will support agricultural infrastructure and outdoor spaces with support and maintenance. These activities will include tending to greenhouses, managing the aquaponics system, managing equipment, and completing tasks such as making honey, boiling sap, and harvesting vegetables for our farm stand.
